Finally.. INTEL TO AMD.... questions though...

I have decided to make the jump to AMD...
I mainly game, BF2 is my primary right now...

I have the following in mind...

    ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+

    *Question is this....

    I thought about getting a Nvidia 7800GT 256mb... EVGA...
    but now second guessing....
    thinking about either a 7800GTX 256mb or maybe even 512mb ....

Is there any worries of the X2 3800+ bottlenecking any gfx cards? I dont think so but not sure...

Any input is appreciated...( getting a better CPU or etc....)
    thanks

What do you mainly use your pc for?

its a gaming pc in my opinion...
but there is some quickbooks, excel, and word.. (minimal though...)

        i wuld think that a 7800gtx 512mb (maybe 256mb) wuld be bottlenecked by a X2 3800+

Here we go again, no, as long as ur processor is like above a A64 3000+ ur fine. Now, must i show links again: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...-games2_3.html
The difference between a 3800+ X2 and the FX-57 is less than 3 fps lol. THis just shows how advanced CPUs are, the GPU is actually bottlenecking the CPU most of the time, but if u have a celeron, that's a different thing.

EDIT: Oh ya, and what's ur budget limit for ur graphics card, and how much memory are u getting for this new comp?

Just be aware that AMD X2 processors + nVidia 8x.xx series drivers = trouble.

I think there are workarounds though.

Dig around the Guru3D Forums for more info.

Here's a link to one workaround:

so how about a Opteron 165 with a generous OC...
              most likely going 7800GTX..256mb

That's god, Optys usually overclock a GOOD deal, (expect like .8ghz overclocks at least, with stock cooling).

You are wrong, and this test from Xbit labs is very very controversial and they know it.

First of all, they use an 7800GT , they run games not the way they should run games, for example BF2 (this is the one we all know the best) , they run a benchmark demo they made by themselves, this is why you get those incredible high FPS there, more then 200FPS on 1240*1024, high settings , AA4x , don't let me laugh, just try a 64 player server or even a 32 player server where the CPU realy gets his work , also as many many players have said here and on other forums, players with 7800GTX (SLI) etc... running the same settings having sometimes trouble getting there FPS over 50 .

Also they don't test HL2 , wich is the best benchmark for the future you can have (best game engine at this moment wich will last much longuer then others at this moment due to it's very inteligent way of working and adaptable + very good physics engine) , the HL2 engine is much more CPU demanding then other game engines. still they leave this game out ??

Xbit labs is just trying to pull something of with this article, but they are hiding the truth .

                  The truth is, a 3.2Ghz is a bottleneck for a card like a 7800GTX, a 3.4 Ghz is a bottleneck for a card like a 7800GTX , a 3.8Ghz is not a bottleneck for a 7800GTX AT THIS MOMENT !!

It's all depending on the game, when playing 64 maps on BF2 , you will find your FX-57 bottlenecking your 7800GTX , when playing a 16 player map on BF2 you will find your 7800GTX bottlenecking your FX-57 .

In the source engine, you will find your CPU bottlenecking your vid card in almost every situation .

In the future the CPU will bottleneck more and more, because Vid cards become stronger, but the main reason is the future game add more and more realistic features such as physics, AI, complexer gameplay, ....

Absolutely right, the only time CPU really plays a part these days is in RTS games, if you want an extra 1-2 fps playing Rome Total War buy something expensive.

X2's work fine with Nvidia drivers.

If you get an Opteron i'd go for a 144 if i were you, its socket 939,is virtually identical to a FX57 and costs 1/6th of the price and clocks just as fast to boot.

No, they don't. Stop refuting things you obviously know nothing about.

Microsoft even has a hotfix for it, but hey, I guess we should just take your word for it and ignore an official patch released specifically for the conflict introduced in the nVidia drivers.

Dude, ur wrong, GPU tech is way behind, why odn't u ask somebody like flanker. A GTX512mb won't be bottlenecked by even a 3200+.

EDIT: Srry for lack of explanation, i had a conference in like 30 secs so i had to make it quick. Anyways, back to the point, i have 10 min. till another conference, which is plenty of time. Anyways, i agree that HL2 is the best universal game engine at this moment, but i'm talking strictly for BF2, not HL2, so i might give different reccomendations or that game. Anyways, vid card tech may be growing super fast, but so is CPU tech. Anyways, here is more links: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...u-games_3.html
THis shows, when u are running at all low settings (pure speed), the CPU is the independent variable, instead of the GPU, the faster the CPU, the better the FPS. But once u put the settings to max, like most gamerz do, u start getting bogged down by the graphics card like shown in teh other page. Here: "Having analyzed the obtained results we can state that any of the contemporary CPUs will be good for games. Let’s take a look at the results once again. Even though all our tests were carried out in real applications are still somewhat synthetic. In order to reveal the performance dependence on the CPU speed we had to set lower resolution, disable anti-aliasing, reduce the textures quality, etc. In these testing conditions all CPUs provided more or less acceptable fps rate. Some processors were faster, some were slower, however, in real gameplay with real graphics quality settings any gamer would use all this advantage will disappear. This is because the graphics quality and other gaming settings are usually determined by the graphics card potential. By increasing the quality settings, the fps rate will drop down to 40-60 fps, which is ok for normal gaming experience. And you know, any Pentium 4 CPU with the actual working frequency of 3.0GHz and up and any Athlon 64 with the performance rating of 3000+ and up can process that number of frames per second, as we have already shown in our tests. In other words, in real gaming conditions the performance will still be limited by the graphics processor, and not by the CPU.

I have to stress that we arrived at this conclusion having one of the today’s fastest and most powerful graphics cards in our system: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT. And if this powerful graphics card doesn’t require a super-fast CPU, then what can we say about the mainstream graphics solutions? It means that gamers with the mainstream or slower video subsystem shouldn’t even think of getting a powerful CPU: it will be just a waste of money."
THis is a direct quote from teh conclusion of teh article, it says that "In other words, in real gaming conditions the performance will still be limited by the graphics processor, and not by the CPU." The thing is, CPUs are much more advanced AT THE MOMENT than graphics cards. If CPU tech just slows down, and graphics processing tech goes up, then, modern CPUs will start to bottleneck.

If such an official patch exists can you please enlighten me as to where it is? I have been looking and cant find anything like you describe. On neither Nvidia or Microsoft websites. The nearest thing i can find is a hotfix that can improve SP2 users' performance with a X2.
