X2 4400+

Hi

At the moment i have a 3500+ and it really is beginning to show its age abit, Now i wanted to go for more a dual core approach. And i choose the X2 4400+ before i go out and spend £300+ on it. what are your views on it and will i notice a performance increase?

Unless ur multitasking, probably not. a 3500+ should be sufficient, it's the same clock frequency as teh 4400+. I would reccomend going for a s939 opteron instead, they are pretty cheap, and they overclock like crazy.
Also, u could get a 4000+ (non dual core) which is at 2.4 ghz for less price:

I just bought a 3700+ which ain't that much faster then your 3500+. It isn't really gonna give you a huge boost. The way I see it the only way you're going to get a huge performance increase is if you jump up to an FX series or something similiar.

Mate, spend it on a better GFX card. This will increase your BF2 performance more than anything else. A 7800 GTX with 256 or 512 MB. Trust me, you'll be thanking me. All the dual core ******** is for now a marketing gimmick in the sense that for gaming it's useless at the moment. And when it will become usefull your processor would be at the low end of the spectrum. Just wait till it is mainstream in the gamesmarket. And for now, spend the 300 pounds on a 7800 GTX. Your processor is perfectly sweet for playing anything out there. Overclock it 200 Mhz and get the best Nvidia card. Glad to be of service.

You will not notice much improvment, but dual core is nice for the future. I would either spend it on a new monitor or some nice G-SKILL PC4000 RAM 2GB from www.overclockers.co.uk. Only £146!! Then overclock your current CPU a bit.

Im thinking of going for a X2 but I have a 3800+ (Single Core) and well, its doing fine.

I have a 4400+ that I upgraded from a 3500+. And I don't regret it one bit. I'm able to hit 2.8GHz and that's with bad RAM. After I get my RAM back from RMA, I'm confident I'll hit 3.0GHz. I'm happier going from a 3500+ to 4400+ than I am from an X800Pro to 2 7800GTXs and all I do is game.

Sorry, didn't see that. Get a FX-55 than. It would do perfectly, dual core is a waste for the moment.

I have DDR500 and yes I received bad RAM. If you search computer forums, you'll notice tons of people have rma'ed their Ballistix that were from the same batch. If you were lucky, they were fine, but most people weren't. When the Ballistix work, they are awesome. I just wasn't lucky enough to get a good pair.

And I don't see the dual cores as a waste. It's just nice to have the extra power. It's one of those hard to explain things, you just have to have one to understand.

Ya, i agree, in the past months, crucial has been making bad batches, but like u said, if u get a good batch, they're very good.

Dual core is not a waste. I wouldn't listen to this guy, he's the same one that said that 1GB runs BF2 on all maxed vid settings with no lag.

A.) DUAL CORE PROCESSORS DO NOT BENEFIT GAMERS AS NO GAME OUT THER IS DUAL CORE ENABLED!
B.) You claim that you will get better performance out of a 4400+ and an X800GT than you would out of a 3500+ with SLI 7800GT's? May I ask what planet you are from?

All of you dual-core squeezebags out there are just too excited, and oh soo proud to show off your new useless dual-core processors.
Show me hard proof where a DC 64 will give you any real benefit (cost vs. performance) over all us lameos with single cores.

You're wrong.
For pure gaming only, the single cores are faster - but when running a lot of background apps, the dual core really comes to life. Just have a look at this graph from Anandtech, where they tested gaming performance with a lot of other programs running in the background. The X2 4200+ beats the FX-55 hands down:
