    3dMark scores explained...

    So we've all posted our scores and are constantly trying to squeeze out a few more points. Why?

    I am seriously asking this and not being a tool when I ask, what exactly is 3dMark measuring? We can all play the game right?

    I've fallen rey to it myself. I've sat there and watched that stupid sea monster thing a hundred times trying to score higher, when I could have been playing BF2...

    p.s. 7957 is my best while still running stable. Every time I pass 8000, my system starts to bug out.

    3DMark05 gives you a score based on your Frames Per Second in their tests. Its 95% GPU-dependant.

    ATi has a upper hand it in, nothing to do about it.

    ATi now has an even bigger upper hand in it with their Adaptive AA. Someone can enable Adaptive AA on their X1800XT or whatever, and the AA will go up and down to keep the Frames Per Second in an acceptable area. This obviously gives a higher score.

    Finally, 3DMark05 is a BS piece of crap. Good Day.

      Especially since Nvidia has the upper hand with the LOD tweaks provided in OC'ing software that basically lets the cards produce less quality to get higher scores.

        theres no doubt that its completely useless and a waste of time. i have no clue why you would want higher scores rather than having fun on BF2.... uber nerd bragging rights?

        really, whats the point? play BF2 and be happy. if your rigs having probs, play it on lower settings.

        the whole measuring thing should go away. it means nothing and wastes time.

          You do understand that competitiveness is a natural part of human nature, don't you. We're all competitive about certain things to a level. It's no different that racing your car, etc.

          I would guess there are a lot of things that I think are useless wastes of time that you do, but whatever, you enjoy it, more power to you.

            Wow... thats 100% wrong, Adaptive AA is ATI's version of transparency AA when enabled its equivelant to supersampling on an Nvidia card.

              Exactly what ATi is doing? Only way to get a higher score = Get more FPS. Tweaking will let you get a higher score, but that will be legitimate. Adaptive AA is hardly legitimate.

              Anyways, no point. ONLY thing that matters in real-world performance.

                Turning on Adaptive AA would lower your score, it makes stuff look better

                  No, the LOD tweaks in Nvidia OC'ing software allows for higher FPS and lower detail resulting in a higher score. Adaptive AA on ATI increases detail and lowers FPS resulting in a lower score. Nvidia has the advantage when it comes to 3Dmark.

                      3Dmark is just a benchmark and gives you an idea of the grafic power of the PC .

                      3Dmark lets the PC run the newest technologie that is used in games, (shader models, ....) and makes is very hard , then they look at the FPS .

                      also they look at the CPU power, but not for playing or rendering movies, only set for use in games.

                      A pc with a strong graphics card and cpu will offcourse perform better in games .

                      This way you could say, a pc with 8000 points will perform better then a pc with 7000 points .

                      BUT, this is mostly true , but not always , this because some games use diferent techniques in there engine , and also the grap card manufactures always write there drivers to perform good in 3dmarks, because they know people like them .

                      Also, those 3dmark scores , you don't have to take them very close, meaning, if there is only like 500 points difirence between 2 pc's , you won't realy notice it in games , but when you have a pc with 8000 points and a pc with 6000 points, the one with 8000 points will be faster over the whole line without no doubt

                          I'm really no fanboy. I have owned and will continue to own both brands. I've owned about six Nvidia cards off the top of my head. Are you assuming it's ATI biased because ATI usually wins with each generation? What facts are you basing that assumption on?

                              Using it to determine how much of an increase a new video card purchase gave, is a good reason to use the program.

                              Assuming you have the same hardware as before other than the new card.
