    mixing ram

    i was wondering if i could mix 3200 with 2700 and if there would be a performance decrease feom that and also mixing brands i wanted to know cause i want another 512 stick and super talent is expensive

      I mixed 2 512 sticks of PC2700 (both of which were different brands) with 2 512 sticks of PC3200 (matched pair) to get 2 GB and it ran fine. I used my memory divider to get them all running at 333 MHz. The performance was great.

      I replaced the 2 sticks of PC2700 with 2 matched sticks of PC3200 so that all 4 sticks matched and got no performance increase.

          I certainly don't recommend mixing RAM unless you can avoid it...but as you can tell, it can certainly be the right thing to do under certain circumstances...and ESPECIALLY where BF2 is concerned. MORE RAM = BETTER!

            Yeah my brother has mixed ram 4 x 256 atm PC2100/PC2700. The ram will default to the lowest speed ram ie PC2700 in your case. You may have to play with the timings to get it stable. The ram will also have to have the same number of populated sides to run in dual channel. For instance both single sided, or both double sided.

              It's hard to get them to run dual channel. That's why they sell ram in matched pairs for dual channel. Even buying 2 sticks seperately of the same exact ram doesn't guarantee dual channel. You're best off buying a matched pair if you want it work like it should without potential problems.

                  I ran that entire mish-mash of a setup in Dual Channel. You just have to make sure that if you are using 2 different brands that their speed and timings are identical to achieve dual channel for that pair.

                    Guys you are slightly wrong on this issue. You only requirement for dual channel is that they be the same sided DIMMs. They don't need to be the same brand or timings. They don't even need to be the same speed.

                    I don't see how if you buy two different sticks of the same ram seperately it won't run in dual channel.

                    The question is can it be done? The answer is yes. Like I said you may have to mess with the timings to get it to run stable. I'm also not recommending that you do it this way.

                      Oops...sorry for the misinformation. I was simply inondated with people stating that I could not run my mixed RAM in dual channel and I blindly accepted their statements.

                        Yeah I hear alot of things, but I have tested this myself. My brothers rig has a buffet of different ram and speed all 256mb DIMMs. They are all single sided and running in dual channel. The PC2700 defaulted to PC2100 speeds, and I had to go loosen the timings up to get it stable, but it works. It plays BF2 stable for hours.

                          What wreck said is correct.

                          And to add to that:
                          Talus, depending on what kind of CPU you have, what probably happened in your case is when you added the 4 sticks of pc3200 your CPU(if AMD64) automatically lowered the memory speed to 333mhz because of a limitation of the memorry controller.

                          Since 95% or more of all 512mb sized modules are double sided, this is what happens. The exception for AMD64's is the lastest Venice core, which would allow you to use 4 double sided sticks of 512 at 400mhz, but at a command rate of 2T.

                          If you do in fact have an Athlon64 with Venice or San Diego core, or any Opteron CPU, go into your BIOS and check the command rate. If it is currently set at 1T, you should be able to get 400mhz by setting it to 2T.

                          again, all this only applies if you have a new AMD64 Venice/San Diego core CPU.
