If you have a sound card and you select "software" then you are not using your sound card but using CPU resources instead. Is that correct?

Yes, you are not using the card's audio processing/mixer, you're using the CPU to do the work.

um Need_2_Kill, i have an audigy 2 zs and i have probs with it plugged in analog wise for a 5.1 setup. what exactly did you do that made yours work? did you download the openAL beta drivers? and i got the card from a friend without the CD so i dont have the EAX console and cant disable it, nor do i have the THX console, i just have the audio console that i downloaded from creative.

when i plug it in according to the manual, i get no subwoofer sound but the rest seems to work normally.

but when i plug the subwoofer/center cable into the middle jack (number 2) i get subwoofer, but only on sounds that come from BEHIND me in BF2, ones from in front have no subwoofer at all and sounds from behind have TOO much subwoofer.

and what programs can cause BF2s sound to not work right? i want to know in case that is causing my problem.

if you can get into Diagnostics, it will check everything then test your speaker connection, and it will give a diagram on where to connect them
