Is it even possible to have more than 4?

Not with 32 bit addressing. Since Win x64 uses 64 bit addressing it can have more than 4, but in Win XP you cannot. XP will not even fully recognize 4GB.

Having no page file is BAD. It doesn't matter how much ram you have, you need some page file. Turn it back on.

Ive had 3 gig for a while. It works just like all the improvements you make to your computer, Great for a couple of weeks then BF2 slows down again and you have to go problem solving.I can load a map, varify, and be on the map in about 2 min max, now im having lag issues. Waaahhh. Its always something.

Hey Jimmy Im in Ky too, how bout them wild cats. . . . . . . .Red

Re: Forget 2 GB of RAM

I have 512mb of ram and Im usually the first one in the map
Not that helps a lot though, the first 10 sec im in the map my computer is going to stutter pretty bad, the more people in the game the longer it lasts.
For smaller servers or for second time I load the map the problem goes away

Then again I have SATA HDD, that might be the reason.

Still need evenly paired gig sticks to still use the dual-channel mode on older motherboards don't you?

I wish people would stop posting misleading threads like this. There is not going to be any performance gain at all by getting more than 2Gb of ram.

Going from 2 to 3 or 4 gigs wont give you any advantage or better performance. The game uses a maximum of 1.1GB with all of the settings maxed. The rest is just a waste.
I noticed a difference when I upgraded from 1GB to 1.5GB but I also noticed a decrased performance when I went from 1.5GB to 2GB. The reason is that the RAM speed drops from DDR400 to DDR333.
I may go back to 1.5GB as I definitly had a faster "verify client data" process.

I don't think it is misleading. If you have 3GB then you can remove the page file. That file causes your system to slow down by constantly swapping files in and out of a 1 GB file. Have you noticed how many programs are out there to defrag your page file? I don't mean stupid spyware ones either, I mean corporate level ones. Personally, I'd rather not have a page file. RAM is the fastest memory in your computer. So I'm going to put all of my system resources into that. If I can hold everything I'm currently using and the entire "page file" in my RAM then I'd rather do that.

My system IS running at ddr400 with 3 sticks. It isn't dual channel though. When I'm loading it takes longer to go through the scores at the end of the round than for me to load a game now. I am not running many processes in the backround though. Athlon64 3200+ with 256 MB 6800 GT.

Windows XP 32-bit can use 4GB with a switch (/3GB) while 64-bit can use up to 128 GB. Server 2003 (depending on the version) 32-bit can be upwards of 128 GB or 64-bit is 1 TB.

Bottom line is that the more information you can put into the fastest parts on your machine is the best way to increase performance for video editing/gaming/etc. So by putting as much as you possibly can into RAM will give you an increase. Nobody can convince me that a hard drive is faster than RAM....esp. when considering the RAM is so closely connected to the CPU and the hard drive has to go through more obstacles to be processed by the CPU.

Actually, im pretty sure most (if not all) Socket 754 boards didnt support dual-channel. Infact, most of the claimed to be PC3200 compliant, until you load a stick into the third channel which then downclocks ALL the ram to PC2700.

Just letting you guys know that 3.0 can do a lot more than 2.0. I'm sure I'll get the "duh" comments, but there are plenty of benchmarks out there that say 1.0 and 1.5 don't have much of a difference. BF is really one of the first I think benefits immensely from more than 1.5. I never experienced 2, but some friends have it and now I load a lot faster. It seems like BF really hammers that page file pretty bad. Just need to try this out on FEAR to see if that helps.
Actually I removed my page file when I went to 2gb of RAM. It doesn't take 3+gb of memory to make page file removal a viable option. In fact I would recommend anyone with 2gb or higher to remove your PF, it will dramatically increase your performance. The type of memory is importatnt too. CL3 memory will not perform as well as CL2.5 or 2.0. Also if you are still using PC266 or 33 memory, you may want to keep your PF. Just FYI.

The pagefile cannot be removed even if you have a terabyte of ram. if you remove it your system may crash from time to time. aso some programs like adobe photoeshop and more will stop working. Windows is designed to have a pagefile regardless of how much ram you have.

The page file CAN be removed. Plain and simple, you do NOT have to use one. The only reason the machine would crash is if you needed to access more memory than RAM you have. Photoshop can load some insanely huge files. If you load up enough programs then yes, you can run out of RAM. What is the cause of that? That would lead to a USER ERROR....not a machine that is incapable. You need to know how to use your own machine. When I play games with no page file and 3 GB RAM, the only other programs running are ventrilo and antivirus. In this case no page file makes sense. If someone is doing video editing then a page file should be used. My computer is only used for gaming...not a single other thing because I have another machine for that. So why do I need a page file? There isn't a single reason to need one for this machine. You are correct with Photoshop....but if you are taking away the page file and using the machine for video/photo editing then you are an idiot. Those programs eat RAM like crazy.

If you had issues with photoshop and no page file then there is nothing wrong with the machine....just an incorrect configuration by the USER.
