Has anyone upgraded to 4GB RAM?

Hi,

I remember reading a post somewhere (don't think it was this forum) from a guy who upgraded from 2 -> 4GB, and he experienced a great performance boost. He said something along the lines of "1->2GB was a great experience, BF2 ran stutter free and perfect. But 2->4GB made BF2 go into hypermode!"

Anyway, have any of you gone from 2 -> 4GB? And what is your experience?
I'd like to upgrade my PC again, and the only department "lacking" is the RAM. It's pricey though, nearly $500, so I wanted to hear some experience before deciding. Are there any reviews done wrt 4GB in gaming (particularly BF2) that anyone knows of?

windows does not recongnise more than 3gb i think.

I'm not sure if that is correct mate, seeing as a lot of todays motherboards can take 8GB it'd be very weird if Windows can't take advantage of it.

I remember the guy with the 4GB ram loaded a game of BF2 around 4-5secs, insane. I plan to get a new mobo with 4GB of RAM

I placed my order anyway, I figured if it doesn't change a thing I can just return it :)

You have to do some registry hacks to get Windows XP to recognize anything over 3GB. Windows 64 doesn't have that problem. With the performance hit I'd take from 2GB to 4GB, I won't be doing it anytime soon. If they came out with 2GB sticks, then I would. But since I would go from 1T>2T and whatever else, I'm not worried about it. 2GB works perfectly fine. Nothing a normal user encounters needs 4GBs.

Ive ran 4gb in my machine and theres no difference. Remeber a machine will only use what it requires so if a game uses 1.5gb of ram then thats all it will use!

Yep you'll need windoze64 to use that much RAM. I think winXP Pro (32bit) can only address 3gb?

Also, rymaples makes a valid point. If you use 4 sticks of RAM your motherboard/RAM will run at a reduced speed. Being as BF2 wont take much advantage of the extra 2gb RAM you may find it's all a bit worthless, and somethings may even run (or certainly) bench slower with the 2T timings!

If 4GB gives you an advantage it's time to clean up your system. At that point you got so many programs running in the back that even a virus would just leave to find a better PC.

Seriously Battlefield 2 uses 800-900MB of RAM and therefore with 1GB of RAM there isn't to much space left for the operating system. 2GB would provide that space and therefore give the performance boost. Since loading for the pagefile is slow.

Above 2GB that would make a difference anymore unless you want to run 15 virusscanners, photoshop, 10 firewalls, 4 browsers and 5 messengers in the background when you are gaming.

i have 4x512mb of kingston value very happy with it no lag whats so ever and always 2nd or 3rd to join server.

My friend runs BF2 with 4gigs of ram and he doesn't really load in that much faster than I do with my 2gb. He's got a much better computer than me, so his graphics performance in game is of course much better.

but how much of a performace decrease would i see if i add another 2x512mb sticks (i already have 2x512mb sticks) as i really dont want to pay so much to get 2x1gb sticks

Well the gain will be mostly seen in load times of levels which should be cut down to 15-30 seconds, and if you experience any swap file related stuttering in the game it will be gone. I't won't improve your FPS by much if any.

Whoever said using 4Gb of ram over 2Gb helped playing BF2 is a liar or an idiot. Please no one go out an by 4Gb of ram just to play BF2 because it would be a pointless move.

I'm not buying it just to play BF2, but I'm still interested in seeing if there's a difference in-game between 2 and 4GB.

Are you sure it's impossible to run the memory with 1T?
