Weird and annoying problem - Green/Purple lines

Nowadays when I turn on the PC I the screen goes crazy and I get strange green and purple lines all over the screen. Some days it rarely happens and other days it happens every time you switch on the computer.

The times when I manage to start windows without having these weird bars all over the screen, they soon show up when I either launch a game, launch a website that has a lot of graphics on them or just press the update key (F5) a lot to refresh a window for instance.

First time the problem appeared was when I launched BF2 for the first time about a month ago but it quickly went away when i opened up the squad menu (caps lock). Since then it has appeared more often.

Does anyone know what this is and how I can solve it? It's really annoying because the bars don't go away until the 20th reboot or something o_O

Specs:
Pentium 4, 2,8 ghz, 512 RAM
ATI Radeon 9500 / 9700
Soundblaster Audigy 2

I've tried to update drivers for sound, video and monitor but doesn't help.

I've had these problems myself.
First thing to do, try the graphics card in another computer. If that's not possible, take the side off your case while your PC is running to let it cool, and see if it helps.

There's 3 possible causes :
1) Your graphics card is overheating
2) Your graphics card is faulty
3) Your power supply has worn out [which was the cause in my last case]

i tried switching power supply cable first as i noticed the one i had on was not the one that shipped with the PC. So far so good, problem seems to have disappeared.
