What is the difference supposed to be? If this helps I have a P4 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM, X800 Pro.

Hardware uses the decoder on the card to render the sound, software uses the cpu to decode and render the sound.

I assume I should use the Hardware? Could it be that I hav eno EAX sounds, such as echos, because I have it on the Software setting?

Set it to Hardware - High - with EAX ticked
That's all you need.
