Ram question...

I have a question here.. IT seems that with 1 gb of ram the game seems to have starting lag..The starting lag is even worse in SF. Now I just purchase another identical 1 gig of ram (2x512 Geil DDR RAM PC 3200). Which is a standard memory, do I get performance increase if I buy PC 4000 ram or with lower latency ram? Is it worth the extra money to buy better ram and scrap my present memory altogether?

If you get faster RAM to use with your slower RAM all of your RAM will run at the speed of the slower RAM so the extra speed is wasted. Either get RAM at the same speed as your old RAM or replace your old RAM and get another gb of faster RAM.

ok..My question is ,is standard ram good enough and is it worth it to spend that extra $$ on XMS rams?Is there any good difference between standard ram and the more expensive ones?? Btw uncle_adolph ,you have a kick ass pc ,why do you go for the standard ram?

Puff!! 512 ram? Do u play Special Forces?? Maybe you don't cuz you are gonna cry see how your pc lag when playing da game. 1 gig of ram in Special Forces is seriously lagging in most starting games. I get pawned because of starting lag and it really **** me off

yeah i play SF and it doesnt seem all that bad to me. it lags a little at the beginning but other than that its pretty smooth. maybe im just used to it so it doesnt seem that bad.

You are better off getting 2X1GB of RAM instead of 4X512. AMD cannot run 4 sticks at 1T so you are stuck at 2T. That sucks. If you have an Intel, it doesn't matter.

I agree, RAM isn't all that expensive either I got my 2 gigs for about $175.

Wow. I paid $320 for mine. :P But I'm running at 250X11 with no mem divider. I paid for DDR500 though. Time to push them a lot higher after I get moved and settled in.

You were correct in getting the exact same ram. Keep the ram and if you have an AMD system then running at 2T will take a 5% performance loss compared to 1T. Don't worry about the setting as it will default to 2T in the bios. The gain from 2Gb of ram will far outweigh the 5% loss compared to 2x 1Gb of ram.

All ram is PC3200 when it comes to DDR. The faster ram ie: PC4000 is just for overclocking and means the ram is rated to run stable at that overclocked speed.

I paid about $260 for my 2 x 1GB PC3200, but it overclocks to PC4000 speeds @ 258mhz. The thing is I had 2 x 512mb G.skill PC4400 which I sold for about $230 at the time. So I only paid $30 for an extra gig.

It depends on your settings and what video card you are using. If you are running low settings at a low resolution you may be able to get by with 512mb of ram. Medium settings and medium res require 1Gb, and High settings at a high res require 2Gb for smooth play.

It's a bit complicated, but here goes. Command rate - is the delay (in clock cycles) between when chip select is asserted (i.e. the RAM is selected) and commands (i.e. Activate Row) can be issued to the RAM. Typical values are 1T (one clock cycle) and 2T (two clock cycles). Really whats important is that 1T is better than 2T, and even with 2T the loss in system performance is only about 5% in most cases. It will not be noticable in a game.
