OK, so the P.o.S. Dell 8400 crashed and burned..so I took her to the local shop down the block to get fixed.
Dude said my Motherboard was dead and 1 of my 256 sticks died with it.
I said no problem was looking to upgrade anyways.
So I left it in his hands, told him to order the stuff to fix it and upgrade it to 2gig.

Now he's charging me 579 bucks for...
ASUS P5GD2-X mother board.
2 sticks of Kingston DIMM DDR2 1g ram.
Athenatech 600 case (says its better for me since Ill have more room to upgrade then in a Dell case)

now I feel he's doubling the price of the RAM..which I can understand, I mean he's there to make a profit, but am I getting raped hardcore..or is he being gentle?

Lastly, once home and rebuilt my specs will be..

Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 Ghz.
Kingston DIMM DDR2 1g ram X2...( 2 gig RAM)
ASUS P5GD2-X mother board
6800 card, the vanilla one not GT, alos its PCI so no clocking.

so what sthe smoothest setting you guys think Ill be able to run?

good grief, you should have sold the remnants of your dell and bought all new core components (A64 based) and a box yourself (dell proprietary rubbish case, good job you got rid of that) :/, really easy to set up yourself - unless ur too busy... but yeah ur getting shafted

Does that price include him transferring everything or just the parts? The basic rule of thumb is 10-20% markup on parts.

I'd say $400 for the parts is reasonable, but you are being taken for a ride. He probably got you some PC2 DDR400....

Thing is I work 4pm to 12am, so yeah Im super busy since my day consist of going to bed at 4-5 am since its my "night time" and when I get it up its like 2 in the afternoon, so really no way for me to order stuff, wait for stuff to be delivered, sign for it etc..
Im not sure the price includes the set-up and such (labor) but it friggin better!
On my bill one part says "Diagnostic/reload/virus 74.95" so hopefully thats part of labor and such...but for close to 600 bucks for M. board, 2gigs of RAM, new case Ill sh** a brick if the price goes up!
See the thing is, the original price for MoBo case and Diag, etc.. was about 200 bucks..he is charging me about 300 bucks for 2 gig of memory!..but Im kinda screwed cause before I saw the bill and price I told him to order the RAM and install it..I had no idea he'd rape me like this..I figured 80-100 bucks for each stick.

So..off topic, well on topic sorta..how high will i be able to run??

also he swears the board is friggin gods gift to gaming..how good is it??
oh and also he is installing new fans, as opposed to the Dell cooling system..which is one fan and some radiator thing that sits on teh motherboard next to the fan.

The board is only a 915 chipset which is the bottom of the line as far as Intel 775 boards go. It really depends on the exact specs and speed of the memory as to whether you are getting raped. Find out.

Its very important to note though, that for computer games the graphics card is what its all about, and im afraid you will prolly still game at the same specs that you did before the comp broke since you have the same gfx card, the extra gig of ram may make some things smoother though - but i think thats it - to be fair- for the ram upgrade, size is what will make the biggest difference to your game, not its frequency or latency settings which are what you pay the mega bucks for...
