switching mobos?

So heres the story for xmas i got a computer i gave my dad a list of everthing i wanted but he screwed it up so ive been returning and replacing parts on it (pain in the ass) so i go to pc wholesale where my dad originally had it built and return some unessacary things that came with it that i already had(monitor,speakers,mouse,keyboard) and with that money buy a bigger ps and a msi 66gt well when i went to my comp to install i realized they had put in some gay ass agp board so 2morrow my dad is going to return the agp and pick me a up a a pci-e. the system already has xp installed and i was wondering if i need to start from scratch and wipe the hd clean or if i can just put the new mobo in and restart the comp. ive also heard that you can switch out the mobo and boot the sytem in safe mode and erase everything off of my computer folder and reboot and the rig will be fine. if this does not work what should i do? thanx in advance

Its a must to reformat your HD evertime you switch Mobos.

I agree. I do not remember where i read this info at but it went along the lines of : if you install a new mobo that you will need to format the harddrive and re install everything because the hard drive has info on it of its exsiting board and the new board has other different info on the hd i.e chipset drivers, audio driver blah blah and so on if that makes since. this info was read along time ago so the accuracy could be wrong on its validation.

I have not reloaded and I have switched form Asrock 939 to Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939nForce3 and back to Asrock 939 without reloading and my PC is as stable as a rock. If you are going back and forth between VIA and Nforce chipsets yes you do, but if you are going from Nforce to Nforce you will be fine!

The statement I made is not incorrect. Sure you may get lucky to get it to work, but to be sure and get maxiumum performance its much better to reformat. Reformatting is very easy and I don't know why most people are afraid to do it.

I agree, takes a few hours. But nothing like starting on a clean slate. Keeps things fast and cleans all the crap that accumulates(drivers, programs, and internet garbage)off the HD. Piece of cake, I do it every 6 months.
