What is SLI and What Uses It?

OKay ... I hear that SLI is a hightech system or something that is built into certain brands of certain parts for certain computers ...

SO what is it? what parts use it (vid card or mobo or processor)? And what must I make compatible with each other in order to use it?

It's 2 identical videocards linked to eachother to give a huge performance. You need a mobo which supports SLI.

It's where 2 nVidia vid cards(must be same card/bios) are used on one motherboard. An SLI bridge connects the 2, but you only have one cable running to your monitor.

Its only worth doing on a 7800GT or higher.

2 x 6600GT > 1 6800GT. So sometimes its worth it.

The cards don't have to be the same bios, same brand, or even use an SLI bridge anymore. You'll need the new revision NF4 boards for that luxury though.

Back to the topic, you can see huge increases in certain games and benchmarks. Basically, if you want to play on max vid settings for any game in the next year, go SLI 7800s.

cross fire is ATIs version of SLi, but they have less cards compatible, and the performance isnt as good.

ATIs crossfire tech is making some rather surprising jumps lately. You might want to look up previews on the new RD580 chipset that's being released on motherboards around the middle of January. Using the RD580 equiped mobo (code-named "Manta"), twin x1800XT cards beat out 7800GTX. They will also be releasing a PE version of the x1800XT to go head to head with the 7800GTX 512mb.

Twin x1800 cards will be the feature of my new system, which I'll begin building in a few months when I get the cash to spare.

In a few month the X19 series will be out, for around the same price, so im pretty sure you will have 19's not 18's!!!
