    Help please :'( *sniff*

I woke up and opened my lovely presents got SF, speakers, headset and my new proccessor! w00t.

So I finish opening up all my other presents and then I plug in the speakers and stuff and then continue to the proccessor. I remove the old one blah blah blah, install the new one and start up the PC. It seemed like it was going to boot up windows and it took very very very long and then it had the windows is starting up and Crash! and again it did it. then I tried it again and it said the monitor detected an error . So I wasn't able to get windows to even try to boot, so I went into BIOS and looked through and it said that the proccessor speed was wrong and it isn't it's at 3000mhz and the processor is 3.0ghz. I looked through the power and I'm not sure on the power settings or anything and I went and looked at the temps and it said my proccessor was running at 197 degrees farenheit!!! Ok, something is wrong. Do you guys have any ideas on what to do? I'm new to the new proccessor thing. I'm getting a cousin to come over and help. Thanks!

Did you apply thermal grease between the processor and heatsink?

I saw it on the bottom of the heatsink I couldn't tell if it was or wasn't. It's a gray color and you could wipe it off a little bit so I think it's already applied, but it's a cool design though.

So the CPU you bought came with a heatsink with thermal grease already applied to the heatsink? Or you just reused your old heatsink with the thermal paste on it?

LOL, I'm pretty sure it was a heat problem, I thought the "paste" on the back of the heatsink was the coolent, but it turns out it was tape, so I took off the new heatsink and put in my old one, and it seems to keep it decently cool, idling little over 110 farenheit.

That comes out to 43C. That seems a little on the high side for idling. What is it under load?

it appears to be a Prescott. if it is, then those temperatures are normal with the factory HSF.

That's still a lottle high but as long as you have it working now I guess it's ok.

[edit] oh, it's a prescott? In that case then yea that sound about normal.

                              Agreed, if it's a prescott it's fine.
