RAM of Death!!!

Hey I'm new.

Well, right now I have 256 megs of PC800 ram. So i'm playing BF2 at school with friends and 1942 at home. It costs 110 bucks for another 256megs:shock: So I have decided to get a new motherboard. I don't know how to figure out what sockets I have though. What I do know is that I have a P4 and an AGP Graphics Card.

$110 for 256 megs of ram? WTF? I can get 2 1gb sticks for my PC for under $190 from Newegg.com or 1 stick of 1gb for $90. You need to take your shopping elsewhere fella. Go to Newegg.com and I'm sure you will be amazed at the RAM you can cop from there and how cheap

You have an intel 850 chipset board which supports either socket 423, or 478 intel P4's. You need to go download CPU-z, open it (no need to install anything), and see what the package type says. I agree it would be cheaper to get a new board and memory.

Well then you can get a socket 478 motherboard which will be intel 865/875 chipsets.

Wreck you definately know your $hit, so let me ask you something real quick. I have a Dimension 3g with 1GB of Gigaram, Intel Pentium 4 and GEforce 5500. I want to get a MB with a PCIe Bus and a 6800. Would I be able to transfer everything such as my RAM, HD, PSU and so on to the new MB? And can you recommend a MB that would be compatible with my Case? Thanks

Dells are hard to upgrade. Most likely it's a Dell specific motherboard, power supply, and video card slot size. Your motherboard looks to be an older intel board so your current CPU won't work on a PCIexpress motherboard. From the pictures I see you may have a PCI video card. I don't see an AGP slot on that motherboard so you will most like have to do option 2.

1. If you do upgrade to a faster AGP card and you have a standard AGP slot then you can just buy:

Video card

2. If you don't have a standard AGP slot:

Case
Power supply
Motherboard
Video card

3. If you are looking to upgarde to PCI express you would have to upgrade:

Everything

Right, I never even bothered to check if I ahve an AGP slot in there, that would be outstanding! But I'm pretty sure I don't. I'm not at home so I can't check right now. But a PCIe MB wouldn't work with the CPU that came with my PC? That sucks seriously, I'll definately hold off if I would ahve to buy a new CPU too. Thanks for the advice

Like I said you can still use your processor and ram if you stick with an AGP card.
