Can they affect performance? Someone told me if you have 2x512 in already it is better to get two more 512 sticks. Because my pc is coming next week and I would like to have the extra gig by the time it comes. So would I be able to buy the single 1 gig or what?

Re: Different ammount of ram sticks
If you have 2x512 running dual channel mode, then having another 2x512 in dual channel as well would be better than adding a 1gb chip. Having the single 1gb chip in there would break the dual channel, which could cost you some potential extra performance.

Re: Different ammount of ram sticks
Hard to tell. You'd assume it was, since it's a set (DC ram must be a matched pair), but it doesn't specify whether it is DC or not. To find out, you could try calling whoever built your system, or wait until you get it and then run a memory test to check for DC support and status.

Re: Different ammount of ram sticks
you can use 2*512 in combination with 2*256 (total 1.5 gig), and still have dual channel and no performance lost att all
