I envy your temps, I went against better judgement in buying my prescott and not a Northwood. I had used a Northwood for 2 yrs. and have excellent clocks and temps. Funny, I had a 2.6 up to 3.4, and got a 3.2 up to 3.4 before I had to install liquid to up V-Core. But I still love my rig.

Applied the new heat sync. Now when playing BF2 the highest temp i get is 52c and when idle its a steady 35. thanks for you help DV8.

Oh and who every applied the original heat sync did a horrible job. The stuff was everywhere.

Good, I'm glad I could help. You should run Prime 95 for as long as you can, every 12 hours shut it down to cool the paste. If you used artic silver, it'll take a week to start to see the temp drop a few more degrees. GL!

If I had to guess I'd say he's using one of those smaller cases like all the prebuilt PC companies use. They usually have no case fan on them, and have the poorest airflow imaginable.

I'd recommend put at least one or two 120mm case fans on your PC. If the problem still persists, get a better cooling solution for you CPU.

Again, another Pentium user complaining that their CPU runs too hot.
Let me explain. YOU CPU IS WORKING TOO HARD! PENTIUMS ARE POOR GAMING CPU'S.
Example:
You want to tow a 22' ski boat that weighs 2200 lbs.
Which vehicle would you use?
A PT Cruiser 2.7L Turbo (Pentium)
or
A Chevy Suburban with a big honking V8?
Both might pull it, but the Suburban is better suited for the job and does it with less effort.
Pentiums are great for office work, CAD or Photoshop, but the Athlon 64 has established itself as a cool running strong processor.
My advice, Upgrade to Athlon 64!

I run an AMD 64 3500+ with an Artic Cooler 64 and my CPU runs at 43-48 at load.
If you are running the stock Intel heatsink/fan, you are asking for trouble!
Go with Zalman, Artic Cooling or Thermaltake

Also your GPU is not strong enough paired with a P4, the 9600 cannot handle the load so it offloads duties that the GPU would normally handle onto the CPU. Upgrading to an X700 or X800GTO will help alot!

I have an intel and it does not run hot at all. I bet it is cooler idle than yours is, and while playing BF2.

my temps:

Idle 75F
Load: 85F

and my CPU is overclocked.

and why can't people just get over the INTEL vs. AMD debate getting kinda old, as long as you can run the game at good settings with good performance thats all i care about.

yeah, i went against my dads judgement (he's a computer engineer) and bought an AMD processors. He was faithful to the ol P4. But i prevailed, and now i got sick temps for CPU. For idle i get 24C, and for load (Prime 95) i get 31 when doing the "blend" torture test. Now he's swayed over kind of, he envies how fast my computer is.

...I recommend the XP-90 Heatsink with a Panaflo 92mm High-Output Fan. That along with some AS5 should get your temps way down.

that is exactly what I have and I highly recommend it for lowering temps.

I'd say the SI-120, or the XP-120 would do better. But the XP-120 is huge and most likely will block something (one of the PCI-e slots, a mem slot etc.). My personal favorites are teh Big Typhoon, the Scythe Ninja, and the Zalman 9500.

agreed. the xp120 is too big. they do make an all copper xp-90c, and there is another company that makes one similar to the xp-90 but is vertical and you can put a fan on both sides of it.
