Which should I get: Faster RAM or Faster HDD?

I currently have 2 GB of RAM running at 333 MHz (PC2700).
    I currently have a 250 GB 7200 rpm EIDE ATA133 HDD.

    Should I get:

    a) 2 GB of PC3200 @ 400 MHz
    or
    b) 250 GB SATA 7200 rpm HDD

Go to www.pricewatch.com then type in "10000 sata" in the search box.

    WD 36GB SATA 10,000 rpm drive - $104.49 delivered (w/ 3-day shipping).
    WD 74GB SATA 10,000 rpm drive - $158.99 delivered (w/ 3-day shipping).

1GB PC3200 RAM ddr2-400 - $74.50 delivered (ground). This one for a "value" brand. For a brand like Kingston, price is $82.99 shipped.

What is your FSB? Your RAM won't go faster than that, so getting faster ram won't help at all if you CPU doesn't use it. A faster HDD will generally speed up everything, since it's usually the slowest component in a computer.

I'm in Canada so things cost a LOT more here

          I don't have any money to burn...a FX-57 and 2 7800GTXs would cost about $3500

I'd rather get 250 GB at 7200 rpm than get 30-50 GB at 10000 rpm.

I'm leaning towards the RAM as my FSB is running at 400 MHz and I have to use a memory divider to run my current RAM at 333 MHz.

maybe i am cheap and i just dont get it, why spend $200 to $250 for an extra 67mhz of ram. i would keep what u got and get a new vid card instead.

If you are using a divider than I would opt for the ram.

New vid card for me would also mean having to buy a new mobo as I'm currently running AGP.

I ordered the RAM instead of the HDD.

                Thanks for the input.

Mobo and video card maybe in 2 years.

                Next year: new CPU.

Like I said in the other thread, 2 GB of DDR333 and 2GB of DDR400 isn't a very big difference at all.

A 7200RPM ATA133 and 7200RPM SATA150 Harddrive is an EVEN SMALLER difference. Either go with a 10,000RPM Hard Drive or a 250GB SATA150 Hard Drive with 16mb cache (250GB Maxtor MaxLine III). Those are the only things that will make an improvement.

Other than that, I also recommend putting the money towards your new system.

waste of money to buy faster ram or hdd. really won't help in-game performance.

It's just kind of one of those, 'I have a few extra bucks to spend and I upgrade my computer at least once a year...so what do I buy' sort of occasions

I'm not expecting anything at all. But since I still have plenty of HDD space left, I figured that I couldn't go wrong with the RAM. It's something I can always use every day.

I simply ordered an X-Fi sound card and was looking at what else was also on sale just because I was already paying for shipping.

you don't need more memory or a better hard disk you need a better sound card or video card.

Maybe you didn't read my message above...I ordered a new sound card and wanted to get something else since I was already paying for shipping.

I have a 6800GT so I'm sure that'll last me a while yet. But I was running an old Audigy 1 OEM.

I guess both effects won't be noticeble anyway, I would save the money.

I'm starting to believe that one of the main problems around here is that nobody actually reads any of the starting posts, and that they just respond to the thread headline.
