Is my cpu only running at 1ghz??

This question relates to this quote from the 3dmark05 thread:

Find and install A64info.exe and run that. Before my bios update my CPU was only running at 1ghz even though the bios and windows was saying it was at 2.2ghz. After the bios install I had major gains, then I reformatted and I am up to par now. You should be getting at least mid-5000's

When i run programs such as cpu-z and siSoftware Sandra they show a speed of 1000mhz, as do some games such as age of empires 3 and nascar simracing, but in the bios it says 2.2ghz..

..my cpu is an athlon 64 3400+, so should be running @2.2ghz. Am i missing something here?? is something wrong or is there some multiplier involved meaning it is actually running at the correct speed??

edit: my cpu score in 3dmark05 is 2098, is that about right?

Go into your BIOS and see if Cool n' Quiet is enabled. If so disable it.

That did the trick, cpu score up to 3704. Does this mean that i have been really hindering my gaming performance?(if so i feel stupid lol)? or does the other 1.2ghz get used when running more demanding stuff like bf2 anyway?

:wall: :wall: :wall: hmmmm, just noticed a 15-20 increase in fps, I have had this PC for 11 months, and effectively been running the worlds crappest CPU. I'm gonna send my PC manufacturer some hate mail, they obviously heard me say "optimize for office use please" when i bought it...

...i think i deserve a cookie now...

optimise for office use means they will give you a machine that doesn't consumes to much power and that doesn't makes tons of noise.

This is why they probably enabled cool quit, this program however should give you max performance when needed, you should send some hate mail to yourself

Dude, they enable it on every system. The first thing you do when you buy a Athlon 64 PC is disable Cool'n'Quiet.

And your Processor speed went up to 2.2GHz when you were gaming. Cool'n'Quiet is only on when Idle (which includes Word Processing and Internet work).

^maybe it is supposed to go up to 2.2 while gaming but it clearly wasn't, hence i can now run a higher resolution with higher settings and 2xAA and still get better fps. The 3dmark05 cpu test shows this as well, that is pretty demanding on the cpu I'm sure so really it should have used all the ghz with cool'n'quiet enabled, but then why the very low score compared to when i disabled it?

Also, I can tell from the sound of the fan it is running much faster than it ever has previously

Cool and quiet only keeps the CPU either 800mhz or 1000mhz when the computer is iddle, or low proccess program, however, when an aplication that requires cpu performance like games, the CPU will clock it self back up to 2.2, so i dont see how you gain more FPS in the game, because the CPU was runing at 2.2 when you were playing.

^Again, I accept that this is supposed to be the csae with cool'n'quiet but it obviously wasn't working properly for me...

...i just put it back on cool'n'quiet, the processor stayed at 1ghz even when i was using 100% of the CPU whilst running 2 antivirus scans, 2 spyware scans, 1 registry scan, windows media player and editing a video in adobe all at the same time. So much that my PC almost locked up, yet still no increase in CPU speed...

Please dont get upset, but something else is wrong if that's what's happening, i just didn't make the stuff up, here is proof so you understand better what i was trying to say
