sry wasnt able to get on untill now, stupid net been down. im on a AMD 3000XP+ though im planing to upgrade to a AMD 64 or FX55/57 depending on my funds, and as far as i know the same ram woudl work in both my current setup and that future one. and no i dont plan on doing any overclocking

save yourself a ton of money and get one of the opteron 144s or whatever the skt939s, or 165s that are dc and learn a little about o/c, it is easy with these cpus, and also the venice and diego cores. this will save you a lot compared to a fx series cpu, which is a total waste when you can get a ~$160 cpu to do almost the same speed performance.

well i was only lookin at the FX series if i had the money and supposing i do get enough il probabally go with them for the hell of it, but id rather not try any OC stuff, im always way to parinoid il break something :P

that is cool, but the cheapest fx is the fx55 for $811 @newegg, diego core, 1mb cache 2.6GHz, the a64 4000 diego core, 1mb cache 2.4GHz is $334 @ newegg, for the ~$500 you would save, just get the a64 4000 and buy a better or additional video card. the fx series is kind of a waste, is 200MHz really worth ~$500?

i know you say you are afraid of o/cing but if you read about it and do it the correct way, there is little chance you will hurt anything. in all honest, for the price you would be paying for you fx55, i could build an entire rig that would perform within ~10% of it because it is not uncommon for venices to go to 2.4 or the opterons i was talking about earlier.

all you need to do to o/c is a good psu like a fortron(fsp), pc&p, seasonic, ocz, antec, some patience and knowledge.

just trying to save you $$$ since computer parts do not increase in value over time, but drop significantly in value.

as much as i think of myself as a comptuer geek, im really not to well versed in specifics, i knwo just what i read, so im not to sure which CPU cores are best for what....i just know that FX series is better then 64 series, and i dont even know how the opterons stack up

I've got a Athlon 64 processor and a two 512 crucial 3200 RAm cards, never encountered any problems with them

a fx is part of the a64 series. within the a64 series in skt939 are different cores and series.

the fx is the "hot dog" and a way for amd to make a ton of money on a part that is really just a o/ced diego core (at the moment).

here are the specs for a diego 4000:

Operating Frequency: 2.6GHz

Series: Athlon 64

as you can see the only difference is the V and also operating frequency.

the opteron series are actually the server cpus that until recently amd only made with different pin counts, like 940. since they introduced them in 939, they are the cpu to get because they are "server" quality cpu, meaning the best of the best since in a server enviornment the uptime needs to be 24/7 x months.

and i have read articles about some of the opteron 146s actually being fx steppings, but for much less the price.

so, save $$$, get a opteron 144 or 146 or if you want dc a 165, get a xp90 hs with 90mm fan and o/c to annhilate a fx cpu.

imo the better to worse(not that any are bad) would be opteron->fx->diego->venice

also, remember, i give advice for the best bang for the buck setup and at the moment the opteron 939 can't be beat with its o/c potential.

so as far as opteron vs a diego....im willin to spend what it takes to get a fairly nice processor and not have to do any overclocking, so like...does the opteron have any clear advantage over 64 4000+?

imho, the opterons are the best of the best and would have the best o/c headroom for the price. at clock speeds i doubt you would notice much if anything. a 4000diego=2.4GHz @ ~$350, a opteron 148=2.2GHz (~$235) or a opteron 150 @ 2.4GHz for ~$350.

if i didn't want to o/c, i would go the opteron over the diego since they are the same price.

being cheap, since i am, and if i didn't want to o/c i would go the 148 since it is only 200MHz slower than either the 4000diego or 150 opteron and i could put the extra $$$ toward a better video card.

if you wanted to o/c later, you would probably be able to get more out of the opteron than the diego.
