Is SATA 3.0Gb/s HD's worth it?

just wondering if its worth getting over SATA150? and yes, my mobo supports it. was thinkin of getting (2) SATA 3.0Gb/s 16MB cache in RAID0.

From what I've heard yes it is worth it. I'm going to pick 2 up next week as well. Havn't seen any benchmarks yet though.

yah, from what i read, it's just as fast than a 74GB Raptor (Raptor up top by just a fraction) and it's not just limited to 36GB and 74GB.

        Have you seen these?

Seems like a good price on them, that's what I'll be picking up.

They look okay, but ever since the Ibm deathstar days, I just can't trust a hd with that name. How about this one?

A little more expensive, but way more storage, sata 3.0gbs and it has a 16mb cache.

Eh, I'm going to get 2 of them, so $115 each is out of the question. Planning to put some RAID benchmarks together for myself.

There are a couple parts to this answer. Sata 2 can't really show improvement over another hard drive of the same speed that is Sata. The Hard drives these days are limited by there spindle speed 7200rpm is the average. There will be no difference in transfer rates from a Sata 2 and Sata drive that has the same speed in rpm's.

The 3Gb/s is just the transfer bandwidth and really has nothing to do with speeds. It can get filled up which is why if upgrading there is no reason not to get the Sata 2 Drives with 16mb cach which actually does help a little.

So the Sata 2 from Sata is like moving from AGP to PCIexpress which really shows no improvement over the older technology until the bandwidth limit gets reached.

In conclusion I don't see a reason not to get it if you are going to shell out the cash. I'd also recommend Western Digital as their drives have treated me right for a number of years.

I've got a WD 10k 74GB Raptor, and the thing cooks! I am rarely ever beaten into a new map with it! I also have 2GB of PQI DDR4 PC3200 RAM as well.

Thanks for the info, but that really is irrevelant to this discussion.

The only things that will speed up hard drives is platter density and spindle speed. At most a decent hard drive will sustain 60 - 70 MB/s and Im afraid a IDE ATA133 can easily cope with that.

They really arent' that much more expensive. I'm waiting for WD to move the Raptors to SATA2 that will be awesome.

I have the exact same drive on a the machine in my sig. I never, and I mean never get beaten into a map. 80% of the time I'm capping the first flag before anyone else spawns. I also should state that this rig is formatted and has XP pro with nothing but BF2 on it. It's very clean and simple. That's probably the biggest reason for the speed, not necessarily the HD. Before I get flamed, I DO NOT claim to have a super rig, but it does seem to load fast as all hell.
