160gb hardrive only got 131gb!!

ok i got a maxtor 10 160gb sata hardrive


why have i only got 131gb total space???

Was it a brand new drive? Formatting doesn't usually take that much space away.

Have you installed anything? Or did you just format it and see that you were missing 30gigs?

it's perfectly normal you only see 131Gb , in some years the HD space is grown very fast and windows and your bios didn't , so they only are forseen for 131Gb , they use a 28bit for that, but for bigger HD's you need a 48bit .

how do we fix this ?
windows has this feature from SP1 , you probably have this but to make shure it's in the register you need to install big_drive_enabler.exe , this is a program from maxtor and you can find this on there site.
or this program EnableBigLba tool

normaly it chould work an you will see the full HD space, it has nothing to do with formating or partition or whatever

Which service pack are you running, if your running windows that is?
Was the feature that makes the rest of the hard drive avalible in service pack 2 if you updated from service pack 1?

Oh and about this program (big_drive_enabler.exe) it won't remove, or do anything to the files on the hard drive when it is installed will it?

no when windows says it's 131Gb you can only use 131Gb, this means your windows is now OK for big HD's .
this means your BIOS is to old and doesn't suport big HD's , meaning you have to do a BIOS update .

when you go into the BIOS, what does it say about the disc space ? if it also says 131Gb , well , then it's your bios who is the screwup .

check website of mobo manufacturor and look for BIOS update.

?? I thought it was death merchan or something who had this problem ??
if you don't have any problems don't update your bios, it isn't neede then , you won't find any performance gain with bios updates, only support for stuff (bigger HD, more CPU, ....) .

how to find out (people realy should know what motherboard there pc has when they buy the dam thing ) download a program like Sisoft sandra , let it take a scan of your system and it will tell you the name of the motherboard .
I don't know if you can find it on the pc somewhere like device manager or something

You also need to make sure you have an up to date ATAPI driver as well as using the "EnableBigLba 1" setting. If you have an older base version of XP (especially home version) OR lots of the burnt version had an obolete version thats wont update propely through windows update.

To determine if you have the latest ATAPI driver, verify that the version of Atapi.sys in your %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder is version 5.1.2600.1135

If your version number does NOT end in "1135" then istall this update http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Ignore the hotfix topic about drive hibernation and such, that small update will update the ATAPI driver to the newest version and enable full LBA-48 bit support (large drive support)
