connecting 2 computers

As some of you might know I am getting a new pc. But my dad wants to hook my new pc into the family pc. I just have a few questions


1.What type of wires do you need to do this?
2.Will it slow down my pc, and what eacxtly can you do when there hooked up?

1. You will need some cat-5 cable (otherwise known as ethernet).
2.Unless you use a router, there's really nothing you can do.

You need a router or residential gateway. You will need two more eithernet cables. It won't slow down your computer. You will be able to share, transfer, and edit any files you allow other computers on the network privleges to.

If you put in 2 network cards in PC1, and connect LAN adapter 1 to the Internet and the other to PC2 or a switch then PC1 will work as a router and other PCs can connect to the Internet via it.

PC2 just needs one nic, and to be connected to PC1 or their commen switch.

On PC1, you go into Network Connections, select the LAN adapter 1, where the Inet is hooked up to, and right-click -> Properties -> Advanced tab and select the option for other to connect to the Internet via this interface.

This will automatically setup LAN adapter 2 in PC1 with ip: 192.168.0.1

Now from PC2 you can set it up to get IP automatically from PC1 by just selecting TCP/IP settings so it gets IP automatically.

If you prefer to set it up manually, just give PC2's TCP/IP settings these settings:
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

All this can also be done by going into the Network Connections and starting the Network Wizard and selecting the proper configuration for each PC. Quite simple if you take the time to really read what the guide asks you.

Lol, sure, simple, not. Microsoft techsupport cant even get my two machines to talk to each other. It *should* work but it doesnt.

If they will be right next to eachother then do a wired connection. If not do wireless. Make sure they get the wireless connection though as it maybe slightly slower.

And if you need to do hardwired, just find some Cat5/6 cabling that will go as far as you need it. I have one that is like 50 feet or something that goes to my basement.
