If you have a joystick, and a USB keyboard IT WILL NOT WORK IN BF2. Atleast not by default.
I have a Saitek Cybord 3D Rumble Force joystick and the Siatek Eclipse Keyboard (both USB). For the life of me I could not get them to work. By accidentl looking for the latest drivers for my joystick I stumbled across the fix!
USB Keyboards are actually detected as JOYSTICKS by Windows. This used to be correctable, but Micro$oft decided to take the feature that allowed you to change hardware IDs out and force manufactures to use DX9 configurations (good call M$). So as mad as you maybe at the manufactures you should be even more mad at Microsoft.
Here is how to go about fixing it.
Find out the PID/VID of your keyboard. You can do this by going
Start > Control Panel
Windows XP View:
Performance and Maintanence > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Human Interface Devices and look for your keyboard listing.
Windows Classic View:
System > Hardware > Device Manager > Human Interface Devices and look for your keyboard listing.
When you find your keyboard double click on it in Device Manager. A small dialog window should pop up. Click the "Details" tab on the top.
Your VID and PID will be listed. In my case (Saitek Eclipse/Gamers Keyboard)....
USB\VID_06A3&PID_8000&MI_00\6&11AA8640&0&0000
You need to disable all of the Human Interface Decives that have that PID/VID. One of them will not allow you to disable it. That is OKAY. Leave it. Disable all the rest of them with that PID/VID though.
Magically this should enable BF2 to recognize you joystick again! It worked for me, please if you need help post here! I tried to be as detailed as I could, but if you need further explination don't hesitate to ask!
