$500 to spare - help me upgrade my cpu, mobo & graphics card!

all parts will be bought on eBay.

    i need a new:

    *cpu (preferably AMD)
*motherboard (preferably with 3 or more memory slots)
    *graphics card (preferably ATI)

    my current specs:

    amd athlon xp 2200+ (1.8ghz)
    1024mb ram
    ati radeon 9600xt with 256mb

also, what type of power supply should i buy? in my other thread, somebody mentioned that the newer cards need to be connected directly to a PSU and it needs it's own power supply unit. i'm thinking of buying a PC case with a bundled PSU (at least 450 watts good enough?) and i don't really want to buy a separate PSU just for the graphics card.

again, EVERYTHING will be bought on eBay.

    thanks!

EDIT: are these any good -> http://computers.listings.ebay.com/3...istingItemList

those are barebone systems. they're cheap and all i have to do is transfer my hard drive, nic, sound card, etc. and i'm all done!

Processor: http://cgi.ebay.com/AMD-socket939-OP...QQcmdZViewItem. It can overclock like crazy as it is a CABYE core. If you don't want opteron ehre you go:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/AMD-Athlon-64-FX...QQcmdZViewItem
    Mobo: http://cgi.ebay.com/eVGA-Socket-939-...QQcmdZViewItem
It's sli, but it's the cheapest i could find, it's pretty good.
    Graphics Card: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Unopened-ATI...QQcmdZViewItem
If you want BUy it now items, it will cost you more. But that's the best ATI card under 500 bucks. ALl of the total should be under 500 bucks.

Never go with a generic unit, that's the best way to fry your new comp.Look for a good brand name.

Yeah, my generic one with this rig burned out after only 2 months. Get from Seasonic, OCZ, ANtec, Enermax, or PC Power and Cooling. THey are trusted, i would reccomend to buy a PSU from newegg, as you do have money to spare.

I'd like to add Forton to that list. I think Forton's real name is FSP Group though, so you might wanna search with that.

            <--- Proud Forton owner.

Ya know, someone should make a sticky with all the recommended parts in it, that way we won't get 100+ threads asking the same question.

Well, the only reason my links were to ebay was because he specificaly specified ebay only. If the guy trusts ebay (i am kinda half and half myself, maybe not for computer parts though), then let him buy from ebay, plus, you can get a FX-55 for less than 200 or an opteron 148 for less than 2 bucks, a X1800XL for less than 200, a mobo for less than 5 bucks. So if this guy trusts ebay, and all the parts turn out good, he woulda saved over 500 bucks in parts, as a X1800XL costs 370 bucks, a evga sli mobo costs 150 bucks, a opteron 148 costs 230 bucks, or if he wants the fx, it costs like 900 bucks on newegg.com. I'm not saying ebay is good, i'm just saying, if all the parts turn up good, he will have saved a TON of money.

                        ^^^^^ I agree totally...

Yes he would save a tonne... but i love to buy new... something could be faulty and you cant send it back especially if the sender never replys back to you... but usually online vendors will...

But if he trusts it, im for it... id just be very very very SUPER careful when it comes to ebay!

Yeah, i've bought little things like coffee makers, cell phone chargers etc., stuff that doesn't cost much from ebay. I don't trust ebay enough for pc parts, but if this guy does, just let him be that way, cause if al the stuff turns out good, he'll get the last laugh against you guys. Because he saved over 500 bucks on ebay (you'd save over 500 bucks by just buying the FX-57).

Opterons OC like crazy if you have a CABYE or CABNE stepping, even if you have a CABGE stepping, you could still prob overclock to 3ghz on stock HSF.
