A quick RAM question

I am getting a new motherboard and the type of memory is DDR400(3200) but when I search DDR400 on newegg everything is DDR SDRAM, I thought SD and DDR RAM are totally different?

both are SDRAM , but DDR SDRAM is DUBLE DATA RATE SDRAM
and the older one is SDR SDRAM, SINGLE DATA RATE RAM .

DDR SDRAM has two clockcycles for each single FSB clockcycle

Make sure you get CL2 (Cas Latency) or 2.5 at the most, CL3 memory sux for gaming.

There is no noticable difference in a game from CL2 to CL3. The only way you will notice is in a benchmark program, and even thats minimal.

Absolutely true Wreck infact most benchmarks and test show that CL timings have little to no affect on games and other programs. So take into consideration cost as well. If they are the same price or the lower CL timings are $5 more then go for it, but if its like $30 difference then pass on it.

this is a load of crap, timings won't give you better performance if your machine isn't set to it, when you install CL 3 or CL 2.0 in your machine, it will perform exactly the same or even wurse with the low latency memory, only when you set the timings correct in your bios or OC your memory you will benifit from low latency memory.

friend of me even has higher performance with timings set higher then his memory , you have to test a lot with memory for getting the best performance with all your other hardware.

Thats average. The best you will find is 1.5-2-2-5, and anything higher than 3-4-4-8 is pretty bad.

Wrong. DDR means sending one instruction on the rise of the clock cycle, and one on tha fall of the clock cycle. The clock speed is 200MHz, but the EFFECTIVE speed is 400MHz. If you count the clock cycles, its 200MHz. If you count how much it can do, its 400MHz.

aonther quick question what is a cache? the anthlon 64 processor I am getting says L1 Cache size=128KB and L2 Cache size= 1MB

Long story short, its how much data the CPU can process at one time. The larger the cache, the more the processor can take in and put out. Don't worry bout it, doesn't make THAT big of a difference in games.
