paging file sizw?

i just installed a new HD 120gig and i was wondering if there was anything else that could be tweaked with to give me the best performance for gaming?

i havent altered any settings so i know some things need to be altered i just cant remeber what to do. any help would be ppreciated.


p4 2.6 1024 mb of ram or 1 gig 9800 pro video card.

Make sure your processes aren't running in the background when you play. I set my page file to 1024mb max and min. You can also run windows in performance mode. To adjust all these settings you can go to start, control panel, system, advanced, performance. To end your processes open task manager.

I find just defraging my pagefile helps. you'll need a program like diskeeper, or perfect disk to do it though.

the best thing is to let windows manage it. if you must set it to some hard coded value then set it to the amount of memory that you have. So if you have 1024 mb of memory set it to 1024 mb.

so i have 1024 ram my paging file should be 2068 or something close?

Yes keep it twice the amount of your ram. So if 1 gig make the page file 2 gigs. The only thing is if you have 2 gigs, you can keep it 2 gigs. It's almost impossible for an average gamer to use up his 2 gigs of ram and 2 gigs of the page file at the same time.

If you do go with a static page file (same min-max), make sure to set it up correctly so that it is one contiguous size. All you do is set it to no page file, reboot, then set it to your desired size, and you should end up with a contiguous block on the hard drive.

Yeah that would be my thought, but I put a 512 fixed page file on mine.

Since I have gotten the X2, I leave a lot of programs open and proggies like Photoshop are memory hogs. I know I probably go over 2 gigs while gaming. Plus like you said, even though you don't need one... it's not the wisest thing. I doubt there's any huge performance diference.

It's even better to have your pagefile on a seperate hard drive. I did that and noticed a nice boost in performance (like quicker map loading).
