    I'll be getting this opty around Christmas. As of now, I don't think many US online retailers have it in stock, so I'd jump on one of these before it's too late.

        IMO stay away from e-bay for important stuff like CPUs...

            Didn't see the stepping on either of those, so can't really say which one will overclock better. But if you're asking if you should get a Opteron 146, YES, GET IT NOW.

            Well, can't say to get THOSE now. They might just be people that maxed them out, didn't like it and resold it. Are those new?

            Still, can't say that either of those will overclock better than the other. Need to know the stepping (CABNE, CABYE, CAB2E, CABGE).

                CABNE (all but week 40) > CABYE (only week 40) > CABNE (only week 40) and CABYE (all but week 40) > CAB2E > CABGE.

                There you have your little cheat-sheet for the Opteron steppings. CABNEs are getting 3.1GHz on air while CABGEs are getting as low as 2.5GHz on air, fairly often.

                CABGE steppings remind me of Cabbage steppings, lol. They're Cabbage steppings so they don't overclock much :p.

                  Well, i understand the steppings thing, but whre does it say what stepping it is?

                    Re: Should I get this Opteron???

                    You can't tell what stepping you're going to get if you buy it from Newegg or something, its total luck of the draw. Theres some obvious things influencing though, like CABNEs aeren't made anymore, so obviously the chaces of getting those are reduced quite a bit.

                    But on Ebay, the seller is supposed to tell the stepping of the Opteron because they already got the processor. Even without opening the box, you can tell what the stepping is. If they don't tell the stepping, I personally would get suspicious. It might turn out to be a CABGE stepping that the guy is just trying to get rid of.

                      The stepping is printed on the heatsink of the processor.

                        Lol, I guess I misunderstood your question. Yea, its on the heatsink along with the week # which can be just as important. Thats why I said that you can tell the Stepping without even opening the box because it shows the IHS through a clear plastic on the front.

                          Where are you getting this info on the CABGE stepping? My 3700+ CABGE did 2.9Ghz @ 1.56 volts. Each chips performs indivually, and steppings are not a basis of overclocking abillity. I'm sure some steppings may show a trend, but you could get a "good" stepping that isn't a good overclocker. You could aslo get a "bad" stepping thats a great overclocker.

                            True, but I'd avoid the "cabbage" steppings like the plague.

                              Luck. Getting the info from watching OC Forums and XtremeSystems Forums overclocks for a month and a half now.

                              "Cabbage" = MY TERM! :p
