mouse problems

first post ,so please be gentle with me. when i start the game up my mouse works until after the map is loaded .As soon as i get to the team/soldier type selection screen i can't move the mouse pointer to select anything.
what am i looking at? Hardware probs, software probs, drivers?
athlon64 3000, gigabyte 6600gt with latest drivers(81.summat), 1g ram.

any help appreciated

I would start with mouse drivers.

Go to the controller options screen and hit the 'Reset to Defaults' button.
