i currently am runing a 7800 gtx nvidia recommends 400watts minimum for my card. i installed the card in my pc as instructed adding auxilary power to the rear.my computer only has a 300watt psu and my card is running fine without any problems.i get 60 to 90 fps on all high settings.i will upgrade to a more powerful psu later as recommended but for now everything is fineComment

Re: if i buy a geforce 7800GT what will my minimum PSU have to be?
It's not an easy question to answer...
A good 400W PSU can outperform a bad 500W PSU, so giving a minimum Wattage is impossible.
Most important thing is to go with a good brand, even if it costs a few bucks extra. Check some reviews/PSU topics around the web, use a wattage calculator for an approximate wattage requirement, and no matter what you do; don't use the PSU that comes with the case!
Personally I use a Levicom 450W PSU to power my rig (see my sig), and I've never had any problems with it - be it crashes, unstability or other issues.
It's (almost) all about the brand.Comment

Amps people, it's all about the amps. How many watts you have is pointless. A high-end machine today playing Doom3 will only generate a maybe max of 300w usage during load. Also, your fps has nothing to do with the PSU... a bad PSU willl give you less overclockability and possible stability issues; artifacts, freezes, BSOD, CTDs, etc.Comment

Re: if i buy a geforce 7800GT what will my minimum PSU have to be?
Don't aim for the minimum. Also it has very little to do with the maximum wattage. Get something with at least 26A on the 12V rail. Dual 12V rails would be even better. Get one that's made by a known and trusted brand, such as Enermax, OCZ, Antec, PC P&C, etc.
If you go cheap on the PSU you'll regret it, and don't complain about poor performance here if you do.
The Aspire in my sig is terrible(Voltage fluxuation causes ingame lock ups, and windows locks up if the Vcore is too high. Holding back my overclock), and so was the Ultra I had before that. Thus why I ordered an Enermax Whisper II last night :)Comment
