    6800 Not proforming very well

Alright so i recently got a 6800 (vanilla), and when i got it i was all exited, i could at least play bf2 of med! So after attempting to unlock the xtra pipline (unsucessfully), and unlocking the extra vertex shader, and OCing it, i was ready to play. But on medium i was getting a lot of stuttering, and it was only really alright when i had everything on low. Even with shadows off and all that it lags a good amount in firefights and stuff (like 17fps).
I though it could be ram, but i think i could at least play med. with 1 gig. I read up on it a little, and found that my vidoe card is running in pci mode, and some people said that that slowed it down a lot. Also people said the disableing fastwrite helpes, but i can't find were that is (looking in bios and nvidia settings. So my question is, what should i do? Any suggestions on the aformentioned problems would be great. Thnx

Re: 6800 Not proforming very well

Is yours the PCI-E version or the AGP version? I had the AGP version and it runs miles faster than the PCI-E at stock speeds but it does only have 128Mb of Vram. Battlefield struggles to run medium with only 128Mb texture memory as it will utilise main ram more which will cause slow downs and stuttering no matter how overclocked/unlocked. I was able to fully unlock mine and OC it to 375/850Mhz and BF2 would still stutter on medium. Now I have the 6800GT and it is much better, when I had 2Gig ram I had the settings maxed out at 1152 x 864 and was very sweet.

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers then using Driver Cleaner and reinstalling the latest WHQL drivers? Also try cleaning out the BF2 Cache folder in My Documents to rebuild the shader optimisations. Disabling Fast-Writes can sometimes have the opposite effect but give it a go. Also play around with the AGP appature settings but as you only have 1GB ram, 128 should be the max. Try 256 though.

ya, i have agp....used driver cleaner and drivers are up to date. will try clearing the cache. Were do u disable fastwrite, i heard its in the bios, but mine doesn't have it, so do i not have the feature in my mobo? A lot of people siad they could play med with a 6600GT, but that has same amount of memory, just faster....you think i could play on med with 1.5 gigs?

No idea what your pbolem is. Only thing I can suggest is Spyware search, anti-virus scan and a system defrag.

I have the same card, same system esentially. These are my settings..

        Terrain - High
        Effects - High
        Geometry - High
        Texture - High
        Lightning - Medium
        Dynamic Shadows - Medium
        Dynamic Lightning - Medium
        Texture FIltering - Medium

4x AA, 100% videw distance and 1024x1280 resolution. Runs without a stutter.

really? i know my card is running in pci mode, so if u know how to fix that it would be great. Otherwise i guess ill try some diff spyware programs and some system cleanup. Are u sure u have the 6800 regular 128mb? any other input would be great

              I have the vanilla 6800 256mb, PCI-E.

Like I said, all I can think of is a system defrag, and some spyware/anti-virus search.

ya, u have the 256, so playing on high is no biggie, but i hav to 128mb so its not as easy. i defragged and did spyware, both didn't really help. The wierd thing is that i can play single player on high and do fine....so sumthing about mp is making it a lot slower (probally the explosions and that stuff

Re: 6800 Not proforming very well

Not sure what you mean by running in "PCI mode". You need to get into your computers BIOS to change things like gfx appature/fastwrites and other hardware settings. Depending on which BIOS you have, you usually press Del or F1 when the computer Posts CPU and runs memory check to get in the BIOS. I however, found that disabling fastwrites slowed the card down.

I wonder how the PCI-E 6800 fairs with BF2 and OC'ing. At stock its frequencies are 325Mhz core and 600Mhz ram and benchmarks a lot slower than the AGP version. The AGP version is usually 325 & 750 stock, albeit with 128Mb ram.

AS previously said, run Spybot etc/ dont bother with defraging unless necessary as that aint going to give you better FPS, check whats running in the background of windows. I tend to turn off Messinger and other things like that to give you more ram....having said that, most of windows apps get transferred from ram to the swapfile when gaming.

Im very sceptical about your claims about the level of detail/resolution runing a reasonable frame rate, especially with a very underpowerd 6800 vanilla. How much ram do you have? Any OC'ing?

False claims can give people having gfx problems a false hope of what there hardware can do. Even with my Athlon64 3500 Venice/1GB ram/Unlocked and OC'ed AGP 6800 Vanilla BF2 would not be playable on high with textures medium. I now run all high with medium textures at 1152 x 864 with my 6800GT. Still have 1GB tho.

Check your bios settings and make sure that in your vga setting you have it on agp (it can be pci mode)
make sure you are running it on agp8x

I have a 6600GT and WAS VERY DISAPOINTED since I upgraded from a 256mb 9600pro that was flying with low settings.

after a reformat, an extra 512ddr (only had 512) and now I run it on 1024x768 and med settings (with some lows)

I am still testing it to see if I can make my graphs any better

HOWEVER, I tried at 75 refresh rate and that LAGGED HARD

                      Good luck

You should save up and get a 7800GT

Full Settings, High FPS , no stuttering and great gameplay

I can assure you, those are the settings I am playing at.

                          P4 3.0 GHz w/ HT
                          1024mb DDR2 SDRAM (2 DIMMS)
                          nVidia GeForce 6800 (Vanilla)

I have OC'd the card, but that's it. It's currently running at 420/825 without any toubles. Any higher and I get artifacting, which isn't pretty when it happens :p

I get an average of 40 - 50 FPS, though I rarely check since I never notice a stutter. Never dips below 30 either, even when I'm in an area with arty flying all over my head

I must admit, this card has been good to me.

But, try turning your lighting, dynamic lighting, dynamic shadows and texture filtering at medium. You will get a huge performance boost with no noticeable difference in graphical quality.

                          EDIT: 6600GT problems?

Weired. I have heard it's a rock solid card. More than a few people claim to be running all high with textures and texture filtering on medium, BUT, everyone's card is different, probably why I can get off with those settings and other can't.

I wouldn't be lying, if I wanted to lie, I could easily say I'm running with everything maxed out.. alas..

When i look at the location of my video card it says pci slot when its an agp card. You think that another 512mb ram would help?

i have a geforce 6800 128 agp and it runs bf2 just fine. maybe your computer is infected. take a look at what's running and how much memory you are using without bf2 running. try not starting things like instant messaging. maybe it's some other piece of hardware like your printer using up your cpu. I've had friends have problem with those all-in-one printers even when they are not being used they tend to use cpu to monitor them.
