Graphics card spectrum for my comp.

Hi, before I go and buy a new graphics card(after which I'll stop bugging you at this forum:) ) for my comp.:

Dell OPTIPLEX GX280
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.40GHz
2.00GB of RAM (don't know which brand)


I would love your opinion on what cards is THE best/most appropriate and some other from the top. So if you could please help me with a spectrum with the best on top and then the 2nd best etc I would be eternily grateful.

As it is now my basic knowledge suggests that the 7800gtx comes first followed by:7800gt, x1800xt, x850xt,6800gt... am I wrong with this?

I'll buy a 256mb card with atleast 16 umm...pixelpipelines which I think will increase the time I'll use the card before updating.

Also, do I need to get the PCI-express versions or some of the others?? How would I go about and check?

You need PCI-e. As far as cost/performance I reccomend the 7800gt.

As Jimmy said you will be running on PCI-Express (PCI-e). The 7800GTX is Nvidia's top model, followed by that 7800GT, and the 6800 Ultra.

ATI's top model is the X1800XT (made to compete with the 7800GTX series), then the X1800XL, X1600XT, X1600XL, X1300, X1300XL, and the X850XT PE.

Unfortunately as of right now ATI does not have the X1800XT on the shelves, however the X1800XL is. However the X1800XT will have more memory then the 7800GTX does (512 vs 256). Nvidia does plan on releasing a 512 version of the GTX in the near future.

In terms of performance it is really a personal choice. I have had both ATI and Nvidia and they are about the same interms of performance. ATI will be better in some games and Nvidia in others. I tend to root for under dogs so I have more ATI then I do Nvidia right now. ATI also releases drivers more frequently which usually means you get fixes to problems in games quicker. They usually release 1-2 drivers per month whereas Nvidia usually releases 1 driver per 2-3 months.

Also, according to this site the x1600 etc are 'worse' then the 850s?? hmm, didn't know that.

512mb in a card is basically useless, and you won't see a big performance jump either.

The X1600 cards are the mid-range in the X series versus the X850 being the top of the line X8XX cards. So that is about right. The X1600 should be a little worse but not by much then the X850.
