Well, If you guys would read his post, he said something that will last him for quite a while. And unless you live under a rock, you know that computer hardware is updated and upgraded every day. I'm sure in another year or so, a 6800 will be a low end card.

Fact is, for the price, the 7800 GT is the best bang for your buck. It is the best card out right now, therefore it will last you for a long while.

Overclocking extremely easy.. many guides floating around the net.

So, in conclusion.. 7800 GT

Good choice mate, but you do need to make sure you have a PCI-e or AGP slot.

And I stated in a previous thread.. the vanilla 6600 is a peice of ****e. You could get a GT, get a HUGE performance boost, for what.. 30 more bucks?

EDIT 2: The X800GTO has a 100% sucess rate with being unlocked to an 850xt.. it's much cheaper too. SO basically, you're buying a 850xt.. for much cheaper. Although I forget if it is a certain brand.

I am in the same situation as RTGBS. I have a Dell Dimension 8500 and the Radeon X300 (horrible card). How do you know if you have a PCI or PCI-E card?

If you have a x300, I'm pretty sure that means you have pcie card.

It doesn't really, the 7800gt is better even the x850xtpe.

Now that that 6800GS is out, I'd have to agree that it is probably the best bang for your buck where the 6600GT used to be.

get a X1800 XL, 325 on newegg, over clocks to PAST XT specification, has superior image quality to any other card on the market and can OC to be as fast as its 550 dollar counter part

Here are the cards in order of ascending performance.

6600GT<6800GS=6800GT<X850XT<X1800XL<7800GT<7800GTX <X1800XT.

$400USD? eVGA GeForce 7800GT - $270. Its better than the X1800XL which is MUCH better than the X850XT, thus making the 7800GT completely destroy the X850XT.

Don't be swayed by the prices. The X850XTs(and X850XTPEs) are utter crap as far as price/performance goes. Just because they're more expensive doesn't mean that they're better.

i have an xfx 7800gt and i would really reccomend

it stays really cool even on stock cooling at 480/1100 compared to 400/1000 of a stock 7800gt and its destroying any game i throw at it

i would also reccomend the x1800xl i hear it overclocks very well

on a lower budget the best option would be a x800gto2 better than the x800gto as it has an x850 core other than an x800 core thats if you can find one
