Problems with Logitech Freedom 2.4?

I'm looking at buying a new joystick. I currently have the Logitech Attack 3, and can't stand having Z-axis control. I can get a logitech freedom pretty cheap, but I don't want to waste my money on it if they have lag issues or someother problem that would make it be a waste of money.

So does anyone here have one? If so are they good/bad/indifferent?

ps. I did try and search on this and other than finding people especially keen on the 3D Pro or the Sytech I couldn't really find a good answer....

I LOVE the attack 3. Its so ergonomic. Bought the x45, but i dont like it at all.(Like new and selling it if anyones interested actually)

go to best buy they are clearance evo for 22 bucks! you might have to go to a couple of store or call all of them to get one!

I'm using a Freedom 2.4, have had it for a few years now and love it. I fly planes with it, but not helicopters as I prefer mouse/keyb. for that. As far as I can tell the stick is very precise and really does the job flawlessly. It uses 3 AAA batteries and they last for quite a while. Recommended!

i used to use a Freedom 2.4. the whole "joystick goes into hibernate mode after 2 minutes of inactivity" feature of the 2.4 was maddening.

Illustration 001: you're at an enemy airfield waiting for a jet/chopper to spawn. the vehicle of choice spawns and you make a run for it. once you enter the vehicle, you have to press a button on the joystick to bring it out of hibernate mode. during that 2-5 second pause, you are more open to enemy fire.

Illustration 002: you are playing a flight simulator such as Lock-On: Modern Air Combat and you're flying towards your next target (which happens to be pretty far away). since the target is so far away, you decide to put the aircraft on auto-pilot and step away from the PC to get a drink/bathroom break/whatever. upon return to your PC, your joystick has been in hibernate mode and the aircraft has crashed. brilliant.

for a game like BF2, it's not a bad choice by any means. you just have to remember to tap a button on the joystick before entering choppers/jets. i guess it's a small price to pay when you need a wireless option. and yes, the batteries last for a VERY long time (thanks to the hibernate feature).

my only other gripe, besides the two aforementioned illustrations, is the poor engineering that Logitech used in building the Freedom 2.4. after only 2 months of (heavy) use, the joystick seemed to lose calibration (not fixable) and continually pulled left or right when flying- keeping me from being able to stay centered.

thus i opted for the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (corded) joystick. no more issues with hibernation and the quality of the joystick seems much higher. i've been using it heavily for the past 4 months and have had no problems with it.

just my $0.02.

Vic, be glad that you got one that is well-engineered. when my joystick started giving out, i first thought the batteries were running low, since i had never changed them in the 2 months of gameplay. but after a fresh set, the joystick was still pulling left. i checked Google Groups and found that a lot of other Freedom 2.4 users were having similar problems. could have been a bad batch at Logitech.

my best advice is to check online gaming review sites (like gamespot.com, for example) and make a decision based on those reviews. the Freedom 2.4 scored significantly lower than the Extreme 3D Pro, but i didn't know that until i had already purchased the Freedom 2.4. would've been wise on my part to check the reviews first.
