PC Memory question - latency, CL & ns.

Afternoon all,

I'm going to replace my current 512MB RAM with 1GB. I've checked out my mobo spec and found two different makes that i'm considering (and also within my budget!). The memory spec is pretty much the same except for the latency time....or at least i think that what they're refering too.

One stick has "Access Time = 6 ns" whereas the other is show as "CAS Latency = CL2.5".

Which is quicker? I'm assuming (maybe wrongly!) that they are both references to latency time.

I've searched the web but being a noob to the hardware aspect i've not managed to answer my own question. Can any of you guys help me out?

the lower the latency the better. 2-2-2-5 timings are ideal but not worth the extra money. benchmarks show very small adavantages to low timings. 0-5%
some will tell you otherwise.

Kingston Value 1GB Stick (List shows it will work on my MS-6533 mobo)

Although i've looked on the Corsair website for the mem i've mentioned and it doesn't mention my mobo in the list. The specs match up so i don't know if it'll work or not.

An old thread but thought i'd let you know the outcome. I bought and today installed the the Corsair 2 x 512MB sticks.

BF2 now loads quicker and there is no lag/stuttering at the start of the game. In short, a very worth while 'investment'.

Times are nice, but if the ram is low quality, it will suck either way. For BF2 particularly, this is a RAM hungry game. I used to use 2x 512 sticks of OCZ Gold RAM for awhile, which were 2-3-3-5, but once I threw in a random sorta decent 512 stick in additoin, sure my times went to 3-3-3-8 or something to equal 1.5gb of ram, but that made a BIG difference and my studdering went away. Something to consider...
