Why upgrade at all then? I would just wait.

I have the 550 in my machine and all I can say is "hot hot hot" same would go for the 64 bit version. Your best bet is just to wait and go AMD perhaps sooner then you had planned.

sad but true I know,

If anyone can maybe point me in the direction of a good mobo (SLI preferred) and 2 gigs or RAM for AMD

Id most likely go for an AMD 4000 since the new x2's are really expensive.

oh, and another thing is I just got a 7800GTX and I was hoping to at least open up the bottleneck on my CPU by poppin a 3.4 in there. They are both only $270

go for the 550 , it's cheaper and not a power consumer as the 650 , and it runs less hot then the 650 , but still hot .

2Mb of cache means a lot of extra transistors in your chip, what means more power consumption what means more temperature.

Also the extra cache won't give you much extra performance and in many cases it will even give you no extra performance

Awsome!! Thanks, that was the one I was leaning towards since I really don't mind getting the 3.4 then going to AMD as I will build another PC with the stuff I take out for the AMD switch.

actually rombaft the 650 is more efficient than the 550, since it has some sort intel step that it lowers it's core speed to 2.8 when iddle, so less energy and also less power, please do a bit more reading, i had a 540 and now a 640, i didn't really notice any difference in performance, but the CPU now runs a hell of alot cooler, i use to hit like 54C playing Need for Speed underground, with the new one i only hit like 47, im not mentioning BF2 because by the time i had it, i had already gotten the 640.
But if you are going to gaming go AMD, good luck with what ever you choose.

What about the new "Cedar Mill" and "Prestler" core P4's they will be out shortly build using 65NM tech and they run miles cooler. I believe it can happily OC to 4.5Ghz too.

Just go AMD if you want to play games... simplae.. and if i were you BRUTALITEEEEEEEEEEEE i would wait and get an AMD sooner, they are alot better, alot cooler and you can OC them more.

Really appreciate the feedback guys! I am going to just go with AMD. The only thing that sucks is I have this brand new mobo, 2 gigs DDR2 RAM, the processor and all that which I spent money on and now it s all useless

I need some opinions on a mobo though. A good SLI one as I will be recieving my 7800GTX today and plan on doing SLI at some point in time. I will go with an AMD 64 4000 with 2 gigs or Corsair XMS RAM....sound good?

If you've already got all that, I'm sure going intel wouldn't be a horrable performance killer. Hell, I'm not convinced you really need anything more at all. I fell my 3.0C is all I need, for the next year at least.

Hehe, at least you're not alone! I upgraded from an old 2800+ Barton CPU, to an AMD64 3000+, to an AMD64 3200+, all in the same week! And now, about three weeks later, I'm upgrading to the FX-57.
If you sell your stuff through the right channels, you should be able to get at least 80% of the money you paid for it, back :)

As for your motherboard query, I can really recommend the DFI nF4 SLI-DR motherboard. Never had a single crash with this baby!
You have more overclocking options than you've ever dreamed of, and a lot of extra/special functions! If you can afford it, go for it :)

And, of course, Corsair XMS is awesome.. But if you're thinking of overclocking, you might want to go with the Corsair 2x 1GB 3500LL, as it guarantees a 437MHz speed with timings of 2-3-2-6.

lol me too, i upgraded a £140 SLI mobo and £200 on 2gb of DDR2 ram before i went AMD which cost me further money for mobo and 2 gb ddr400, just for comparisons
my previous rig: P4 3.6HT, GA-8N SLI Royal, 2 x 7800SLI, 2GB DDR 667 3dmark05 of 8300

my current rig as in sig about 12000 3dmark thats how much better the AMD is

ok fan boy, yes is true AMD is better for gaming, but the gap is not that much, and to say intel sucks, is like saying apple sucks compare to regular PC. Please stop being such a fan boy. Oh and by the way my next systems is going to be AMD, so no im not and intel fan boy.

HAHAHAHA now I don't feel so bad and also I just bought the 2 gigs from newegg so I can return them and that money will go into the ram for the new mobo. Ive been looking at Asus Mobos right now but I will continue to do my research. Since I am changing, will my Hard drives and all that be compatible (im sure they will "SATA")?

I've been lookin at the 4000 and it is showing some impressive marks. I don't have the money for one of the FX models but the 4000 is right there.
