Dual 6800 GT or single 7800 GT?

I do not fully understand the sli hardware configuration.

    1) Are vid cards sli equiped, or any pair of identical cards viable to the sli motherboard?

2)What hardware is needed to add the second card into an sli configured motherboard?

Help,,,I am a noob ordering a new pc.

    In simple terms:

    - you need a motherboard capable of SLI
    - you need 2 identical NVIDIA cards that are capable of SLI

Get 1 7800gt since they are 350 now even cheaper some, and it's a great card. You can get a sli board so later on you can put another 78 in it.

to run video cards in SLI you need a SLI enabled motherboard with the supporting chipset, the "cable" or bridge between the two cards come with the motherboard, not the video card.

get one 7800GT , after some time you can add one .

SLI doesn't give you 100% profit in games, only 50% when you are lucky, also most recent games are supported but not all games are.

Vid cards need to be identical, but latest drivers of nvidea support sli with a bit different cards, clock sped must be the same but you can mix an asus with an sli for example.

If you buy an SLI mobo you get the bridge who connects both cards, and you need to set your mobo for SLI , jumpers and crap.

one 7800 blows the 6800 out of the water, and where sli is concerned with a single card you are looking at 7000ish 3dmark05 and 11000+ with 2. so yeah 40% or 50% sounds right

SLi is mainly good for high resolutions, like over 1280x1024, i saw benchmarks of 7800GTX vs. 2x7800GTX in BF2 benches at 1280x1024, they performed the exact same (actually the single GTX pulled off 2 extra fps AVERAGE, but that's still proves my point). SO i would go with the 7800GT definetly, not al games take FULL advantage of SLI, they already take some, but not all. Maybe F.E.A.R. will, cause it utilizes dual core processors suppposedly, and takes the crown from BF2 for the most graphics hungry game ever.
