6800 and 6800GT (AGP)

Hi all,

I have a question: what is a difference (in terms of performance) between a vanilla 6800 128 MB (12pipelines/6 vertex - unblocked) and a full GT 256 MB?

Considering that I have AGP, should I try to replace my current vanilla 6800 with 6800GT cause I have a chance (of course not for free).

Also, this 6800GT is made by Galaxy - do you know this particular company/card from this company?

EDIT: Have you heard about a company called Point of View - do they make decent cards?

Personally, I wouldn't do it. It is not really worth the jump. It would be more worthwhile putting this money into buying a PCI-E Mobo and a nice PCI-E card.

As for Galaxy and Point Of View, never heard of them. I only buy my cards from manufacturers I trust, like ASUS, or PowerColour.

Yeah I agree with that. Id save up the money and go and get yourself an ASUS SLI PCI-E Compliant board and a new PSU (450 - 520Watts). Then go and get yourself a nice 7800GT, seems to be a top runner for me :)

Thans for the advice, but PCI-E will have to wait. My machine is only one year old: PIV 2.8 Prescott, 2 gigs of RAM (4*512, Dual, 400 Mhz, Kingston). I have just bought a new PSU (440W).

A new MOBO + decent GFX would be a waste of money for me: I can afford it, but still do not fancy spending heaps of cash on something that will be worth 30% of the price in 12 months. I'd rather get a new bike or sth :)

The difference you would actually notice would be negligable! Also PCI-E cards do NOT outperform same chipset AGP8 ones! Leave the PCI-E and SLI 7800GTX money pit for the time when you are shopping for a new PC as you will need new RAM, CPU, Graphics card and new power supply!!!

A new P4 CPU with bigger 2Mb L2 cache and of the 3.2+ power level, would be a much better buy! BTW did you say you had 4 DIMMs on a dual channel board? I tried that going from 1GHz to 3GHz and got a massive performance hit!! So had to settle for a 2GHz with only one of the 2 dual channels filled.

Well, I do have 4 512 Kingstons, 400 Mhz, CL3. I have not done extensive testing, as I do not quite know how, but I haven't noticed any performance hits and according to BIOS I am running Dual Channel mode with no probs.

Guys, I have a different question. My friend is about to buy a 6800GT. He basically has 2 options: a used 6800GT with about 12 months of warranty remaining (Leadtek Winfast) or new Galaxy 6800GT (24 months of warranty). The Galaxy card is of course 30% more expensive, but he is not sure if this 12 months less of warranty for the Leadtek matter?

Brand new, unless the used one came from a reliable source.

As to your post, unless you can sell the old card, the upgrade might not be worth it...
