is dual core amd cpu better for gaming?

I was wondering if I should bother spend the little extra money on a dual core 3800+ for gaming? I have been told that now a days games are still single threaded so I should go for the singlw core, but i was eonering to buy it now an p[lan for the future games.what u guys think?

Dual core is not better for gaming right now, but if games start using both cores in the future, it might be a better investment.

It'll be a couple years or more until games start actually utilising dual core processors well, so for gaming a faster single core is better than a slower dual core. However, having a dual core gives you a lot more headroom for mutli-tasking, i.e. burning a CD, talking on TS and listening to music while playing a game wouldn't slow down your CPU (that is if you have 2GB of RAM ). The FX-57 is still THE best processor when it comes down to gaming performance, but the dual cores obviously do better when it comes to multi-tasking.

As you can see in those benchmarks, the single core 3800+ gives better FPS than the dual core 3800+ and even 4200+!

Go for single core, it's cheaper and faster. Unless you plan to do a lot of multi-tasking.

many gamedevelopers already said it's realy hard to almost impossible to develope games for dual core , it will take several years before games start to come out for dual core cpu's , now they realy suck for games.

And dual cores are just marketing craps, everybody wants them but nowbody actualy uses them

I too was under the impression that dual core was NOT better for gaming...until I thought about it a little more.

While the article and its conclusions are absolutely correct, they fail to address one major factor: misc programs we all run and use while gaming.

The article states that running a bare PC single core vs a bare PC dual yeilds no benefits for the dual core.
Now toss in Norton, TeamSpeak/Ventrillo, overlays...there you have 2-3 basic programs many people run while online gaming.

Surely putting those few programs on the 2nd core would free up cycles for the game on the other core.
So in that sense, dual core does in fact increase your gaming, but not in the way we want it to...yet.

The true future will be when games are specifically coded to utilize both cores...which is what the article says is NOT happening yet.

Final thought: don't buy one yet for gaming only needs...

Lots of things are said to be impossible only to become common day. Ask someone in the 1800s if they thought it would ever be possible to travel from end of the country to another in under a day, they would probably say no.

i love my 57 it handles BF2 like a dream, plus ive been playing F.E.A.R (now completed) on max settings and get 75fps avg. personally i wouldnt want to experience these new games with anything else.

When games are produced to use dual cores, the prices of these CPUs will be lower than what they are today.

And as someone else has already mentioned, it's probably a couple of years until we see proper dualcore support in games..

I'd wait, there's no point in paying about 33% extra for a dualcore CPU that gives you the same or even slightly worse performance than an Athlon single core!

In the end it all comes down to your budget. Personally, I'd go for a single core and rather splash the extra cash on some other hardware.

PS: I've e-mailed the author of the Anandtech article, asking him about background programs in dual core CPUs, and if they were planning on doing a "proper" test on this. I'll let you guys know if I receive a reply.

it seems to outperform the 4800+ but only slightly, the main thing with the 57 is its unlocked multiplier it would seem. have a look at those high resolution benchmarks on the above link

Which ever you decide to go for will not matter really.
You wont notice a difference, and you probably wont regret getting either in 5 years time.
All dual core or FX chips will do you for all modern games for 5-7+years.
By then you will probably need to spend again, but wait and see whats about then.
