    Higher Fsb vs Higher Mhz

    I've been wondering for awhile now , whats better for gaming ? Higher fsb or higher Mhz ?


    I've got a Amd xp 2200 1.8 Ghz that runs at 133 fsb and a gig of pc 2700. The motherboard I have in that system is only compatabile at 100/133 fsb . Sandra memory benchmarks show 1300/1200 .


    Now I also have a Amd Sempron 2400 1.667 Ghz that runs at 166 fsb and a gig of pc 2700. The motherboard I have in this system is compatabile at 100/133/166 fsb speeds. Sandra memory benchmarks show 2200/2100 .



    Which system would run games better ?




    Also , I noticed on the compatabile 100/133/166 fsb Motherboard I have , there are options for faster dram timings of Auto +0 +33 and so on.


    Would using the 1.8ghz processor that runs at 133fsb with the compatabile 166fsb motherboard and using the +33 dram option in the bios make this the better system to use?

    Use the Athlon XP, its a 64 bit processor, wo that will help too. You can just OC the fsb a bit.

      Not quite. All the Socket A Sempron bascially is, is a Thoroughberd B (Athlon XP) with a 333 mhx FSB instead of 266 mhz FSB), the socket 754 Semprons are based on the A64. They also have a lower clock speed per performance rating (the higher fsb makes up for some of the difference, but not all).

        But surely he can just OC the xp a bit and it will outperform.

          That would depend entirely on the motherboard and what options are available in bios.

          virusjoejoe, if you could, would you post the name and model number for both motherboards.

            Ok , one is a Ms- 6738 km2m series v1.x This is the one that supports 133 fsb.


            The second is a pc chips m825g , this is the one that supports 166 fsb.

              You want high both really. If Intel would get rid of the 800mhz FSB and keep up with AMD at almost 2Ghz now, their processors would out preform them, but since they don't and refuse to increase it, Intel will forever lack in performance.

              I believe this is one the big reasons AMD is the chip the future. They seem to understand information flow a bit better then Intel does. The also have better memory management which increase the read/write times for RAM which increase the flow of information across the entire computer, which means.....faster everything. Its most evident in the new dual core systems where AMD's processors surpass Intels in almost every single benchmark, including multi-tasking and encoding, Intel's big claim to fame.

                With AMD XP and Sempron I recommend running ram at the same speed as the FSB of the CPU. Atleast with Nforce2 motherboards. In your comparison the Sempron should be faster. FSB is important for games and on your 2200+ the low FSB is really holding it back.

                  The 2 Ghz speed of the AMD refers to the hypertransport. The memory bus is 400Mhz or 200x2 which is the real speed. This is the same as for P4. The 800Mhz is just bs. Intel uses 400Mhz or PC3200 DDR SDRAM. Even if you run dual memory channels that increases the bandwidth the Mhz is still the same. The main reason P4 can't compete with AMD 64 lies in it's architecture. Long pipeline and weak FPU. 2 things that don't work well with games. AMD 64 also has an advantage with the integrated memory controller.

                      Well after being fed up with the constant low frames on 30 + player maps I took some of that advice and decided to overclock my cpu. I've overclocked video cards plenty of times but I was nearly clueless as to the process of doing it for the cpu.


                      After some research about my cpu , I found it to be a Thoroghbred 6-8-1 core processor. Now my motherboard realy limited me to what I could do with it . No multiplyer settings , no dividers either. But after spending some time I managed to clock the 13.5 multi with a 153 fsb for a total of 2065.9 ghz cpu. Thats a total of 265 mhz overclock with temperatures idle at 36 C and under load 40 C




                      I tried 155 fsb but I got a crash when trying to run 3d mark . I have to say after checking battlefield 2 out , it seems that the overclock made a pretty big difference . I was always struggeling on 32 player servers 20 fps in heated battles , sometimes less. But now im averaging about 35fps during those heavy battles.

                        Correct, thus I also stated their seemed to understand information flow better, and had better memory management. I just didn't use the technical lingo.
