Which video card do yall recommend?

OK, I have been having some issues with my GeForce 5900 SE 128, so I am looking into maybe getting another card. I have lapsed on the latest gfx card tech, so a little help would be great. My 5900 has been a good card, but I am wondering what route I should take for an upgrade

1GB PC3200
Maxtor 250GB ATA133 w/ 16MB Cache
Nvidia GeForce 5900SE 128
Audigy Sound Card
17" Samsung Syncmaster 710


I have always been an Nvidia man, I had problems a couple of years ago with ATI cards and their drivers, so I am a little apprehensive about them still, but I have heard they are much better now.

So, what does everyone recommend? I am looking to spend about $200-$250 on a card, and want 256MB on it at least. Also needs to be AGP 4x-8x. I like the most bang for my buck, but then I like to splurge a bit too. I looked at pricewatch, and see a bunch of cards, but haven't been able to see any good comparisons/reviews for them. Anyone got any good sites for that? Toms Hardware looks a little dated with reviews.

You can grab an X800XL @ Newegg for around 250$, and that's an excellent bang for your buck. Sorry, I'm a bit in a hurry right now, so I can't really link you reviews or articles, but you can probably find something at Anandtech.com.

I have the X800XL. It is a very good card for the price. It has handled everything I have thrown at it so far. No problems yet.

6800gt is an awesome card, I currently have a x850pro and im extremely happy w/ it. My 6800 went down and i needed a filler card till the 7800 comes down, but now i might stay w/ ATI for the newer x1800. But for just over $200 the x850pro is a winner.

Thanx guys, that has narrowed it down for me to either the 6800 GT or x800/ x850. What do you think? What other games does everyone else play with these cards?

I can play BF2 at maximum settings with my 6800GT.
Definately a good choice.

The X800XL or 6800GT will both perform well, although I'm willing to bet you'll find the X800XL for a little less money. They both offer the same performance, but in testing the X800XL has inched ahead slightly at higher res. and higher AA settings.

Get a X800GTO2, it basically a X850XT PE!

Get a 7800GT if you have the cash, its well worth the money imo

I am leaning to the 6800 GT, but again its probably my prejudice of ATI that is clouding my judgement. I wouldn't mind splurging a bit on a 7800 gt, but I think its soley pci express right? I have an AGP mobo.

Now that I think of it more, I will probably go with the 6800 GT for now, and then in a year or 2 when I go to my AMD 64 board with PCI-E, I will get a PCI-E card. I figure my AMD XP 3200 chip will last me for a while longer, and I will probably bump up my RAM to 2gb, should last me for quite a while

Yep, a 6800GT is your best choice. Its basically a 6800ULTRA, because you just overclock it :).

Good luck mate. And yes your Xp3200 wil last around 3-5 months more.
