i have a gigabyte mother board, it says with its 3 slots of ram i can have up to 3 gigs. i have been playin bf2 ok with 2 sticks of 512, well i thought ill go buy an extra gig, cant hurt. here where the problems start, any thing higher then 1 gig of ram and i start having memory errors out the butt. windows nor bf2 will barely run, if i click on my computer it will show 2 gigs, or 1.5 gigs, ive tried them both, but nothing seems to work. i have the just the 1 gig stick by it self and it works fine, i have also returned it and swapped it out to make sure it wasnt a bad stick. any ideas men? all the sticks are 2700 mhz btw.

I have 1 512mb stick of pc2100 and another 512mb of pc2700, different brands and all and I have no trouble. But then again, maybe I just got lucky.Comment

Out of interest, what Gigabyte board do you have? I have one and run 2x1GB now but when I had 2x512 I also tried putting another stick in for it to only die on me.Comment

sorry i posted in the wrong joint, anyways, as far as i can tell its a GA-7VAXP, after going thru the pdf, for some reason it shows only combos of same RAM sizes being compatable. even my old computer could do diffrent ram sizes. odd yes. last time i buy a gigabyte, maybe - seemed like a good deal at the time.

I have that exact same board. As far as I know it is a limitation of the KT400 chipset.
Gigabyte are good manufacturers, the problem is with the crppy VIA KT400 chipset, although at the time NVidia's NForce wasn't much better.
But now that both chipsets have matured they are very good.
Gigabytes K8 series are among the best.Comment

im just in a sticky situation, can i upgrade the processor on this board? right now i have an amd 2600 thoughbred. and an agp nvidia 6800 gt oc. i cant justify buying a new mobo and cpu yet only to have to buy an pci xpress since my card is already pretty decent, wouldnt mind paying for better processor and ram though. any tips?Comment

I have the XP3000 barton in mine overclocked to 2.41GHz cooled with a Zalman CNPS 7000-Cu That's the highest proc it will take.Comment

keep onto the ram (if its DDR400) and get another gb stick in the future!
can you run the 1gb stick with a 512??? (1gb in slot 1, 512 in slot 2)
i am currently running 1gb of corsair with 512 of ACE (until my other 1gb corsair is replaced! thankyou RMA) both are same speed just different size and brand, i have a few gigabyte boards and had no problems mixing RAM in those. even different brands such as matrix and ace the gigabyte boards really wasnt that fussyComment

yeah, i tried using the 1 gig and the 512, get loads of momory errors, im just gona go swap it with a 512 today so i can run 3x512, gig and half should be enoughComment

I havent looked to see if anyone posted the answer to your problem. You should never mix RAM if you have 512 then get anohter 512 to match it not a 1024. Second try and get atleast a ddr400 and match the brands! Some ram actually aint compatible with certain mainboards either so it is best to look that up on the RAM sites to see if it is compatiable with your motherboard. when i first started building computers I thought id try and do the same thing you did. Its kindsa like haveing a good battery in with a bad one, makes the good one work harder to make up, leaving it to die quicker.Comment
