    took out 1 of the sticks and managed to play cs:s fine! maybe that was where the problem lay? I'll try other games for longer after work.

        Do you have a S-ATA drive? If so, have you remembered to upgrade the S-ATA drivers?

        Your problem sounds exactly like mine after a format I did - and after ages of troubleshooting I finally found out it was my S-ATA driver causing it.
