Power supply help

I am looking to replace the psu in my unit , as it is a standard Dell one, which says on it 305W, but I doubt that is true.

Has anyone got experience of this, I have been told that because Dell machine psu's don't have a switch on the back of them I may struggle to get it to fit without modifying the case. I would love to change the case also but I also belive the the M/b may not fit a standard ATX case.

Any ideas??

I don't think that fitting a standard ATX PSU to a dell machine is possible without a new board. :S

Ahh yes, this is how Dell keeps you buying things from them.....evil coperate scam. Oh its upgradable....but only with Dell's own ****.

Yes, the Pinouts on Dell PSU are different than the standard PSU, the voltages and all are the same, just in a diff pinconfiguration. So, that means that in principle it is fairly easy yet tedious to make a standard PSU work just fine with a Dell MOBO. Is it worth the hassle? not sure...but it can be done.

I have hard-wired a Dell before using all free or older parts in order to make a cheap gaming router (running freebsd) and it is indeed a PITA. But if you have the spare parts, a multi-meter and a soldering iron, you can make all kinds of neat stuff. :nod:

BTW, I sold the gaming router as an Appliance Unit for $100.
