I currently have this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145500 RAM in my system. I want to upgrade to another Gig. Is it possible to combine this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...C-pr1c3grabb3r RAM to my system without having any problems? The reason I am asking this is because the CAS latency is different in both packages. I've never mixed RAM like this before. Would it be a problem with the bus or data transfer or anything?

Re: RAM Curiosity
Typically they will all run at the speed of the slowest module.
So if you have a stick of 2700 and a stick of 3200 then they will both run at 2700. But since those are both 3200 then you should not have any issues.
CAS latency shouldn't affect anything either and the same rule applies. -

Re: RAM Curiosity
Thanks for the reply man. So basically it will still run at 3-3-3-8? And I will save $10. Do you think thats a wise decision?Comment

Re: RAM Curiosity
They will run yes but performance will suffer compared to the faster module since the CAS latency is 3 clocks.
I personally would fork out the measly extra $10 bucks and get an identical module and run then at a faster Tclock.Comment

Re: RAM Curiosity
Yup cas makes a difference. Depending on your board, I would certainly spend the extra 10 dollars on the lower cas stuff. If you can try to run at 2-2-2-5 that's pretty much the best I've seen stable.
Your best be is probably running the corsair at 2-3-3-6 and then trying to get as much fsb out of it as possible.
Often times ram that's rated at 3-3-3-7 will actually run that speed upto 250Mhz or better. I think the trade off point between increasing cas (numerically) and fsb is somewhere around the 245mhz mark.
3-3-3-7 at 245Mhz is same performance as 2-3-2-5 at 200 mhz.Comment

Re: RAM Curiosity
Depending upon your motherboard and your CPU, it can make a difference in performance and how it should be configured. There is a chance that your RAM speed will default back to 333Mhz once all four RAM DIMMS are full.
If you are on an AMD system, your command rate will also likely be reverted to 2T (2 clock cycles per instruction) instead of 1T. The 1T setting is important to AMD systems. Intel based systems on the other hand tend to default to a command rate of 2T by default no matter how many DIMMS are populated.
So the answer is that it all depends...Comment

Yes, but still try to get the fastest ram possible the best combo is 2x1G sticks low cas.Comment

Back on topic...
I have run with 2GB and with 1GB and could not reap the rewards of the extra capacity. The reason was because the AMD 64's memory controller forced my Command Rate down to 2T instead of the faster 1T Command Rate. Also, I was forced to lower my speeds to 333Mhz then overclock to 400Mhz which is fine - but because all four banks were full, I had to loosen the timings to the point of diminishing returns.
In the end, the performance was the same either way I went: 2GB at slower speed or 1GB with a nice OC running at 2225 1T.
Until I replace my aging 9700 Pro, I won't need the extra Gig because my system won't touch it using the current game settings.Comment

Re: RAM Curiosity
Thanks Shamus,
You pointed out the most important thing. Memory size is not the only effect, it's the speed and cas. If you have to reduce the cas substaintially you won't see the performance gain.
You'll probably see more of a benifit once you move to a etter card. Your probably playing on low? or low with some medium settings?
Sounds like your waiting for the 6800's to come down in price a little.Comment
