    OC'ed 3.0GHz P4 socket 478

    Just want to know if any diehard OC'ers can give me advice if I did anything wrong. I want to possibly OC to 3.6GHz if it will be a noticeable difference in performance. Temps @ idle is 44C w/ stock heatsink. Will upgrade H.S. to this... http://www.thermalright.com/product_default.htm also specs on what I OC'ed http://forums.extremeoverclocking.co...chmentid=74864. My specs... Abit IS-7G mobo, 4x512MB PC3200 Mushkin Enhanced Memory, ATi x700 PRO AGP 256MB, Tt Tsunami Case w/ stock fans (1 front,1 rear,1 side fan), 500 watt Ultra X-connect P.S.

    EDIT: H.S. will be Thermalright xp-120 if link doesn't work.

      I'm not to sure what you're asking? If anyone has overclocked a P4 to 3.6Ghz? I have a 3Ghz P4 and i've taken it up to 3.4 with the stock HSF with no problem, but there isn't much headroom in the 3Ghz ones, especially the Prescotts cos they run very hot as it is. If you want to go to 3.6 you'll need a decent aftermarket HSF.

        Yah I know I'm going to need a aftermarket HSF. But did I overclock it right? And what do you think about that Thermalright HSF? Thanks!

          You want us to tell you if you overclocked something right just by giving us the base and OC'ed speed, and the Idle temp (thats not even specifying whether thats stock clock or OC'ed)?

            ok well it is OC'ed to 3.2GHz. but as far as the voltage goes, is that ok? or does it need to be higher?

            EDIT: Ok all I did was change the FSB frequency in the bios.. and that is how i got it to 3.2GHz. Is that the correct way to begin OC'ing? I'm just trying to learn to OC at a stable rate. Thanks! At 3.2GHz it seems stable (meaning temps stay around 57-58C when running BF2.), but is there anything else I need to monitor besides temps?

              With those loaded temps I wouldn't push it any more. The brief and simple way of overclocking is just the FSB. I haven't done much of it but unless you get a better HSF you're pretty much at your ceiling. Even then its still pretty high but as long as its stable you should be fine right now. You might be able to squeeze out a 3.4 with a better HSF and some arctic silver 5.

                Ok, that's what I wanted to know! Thanks. But I will upgrade to a Thermalright xp-90c w/ Panaflo 120mm fan.

                  Still dont know what you mean by "did i do it right". Did you push the number on your FSB? Is that what you mean? Quick overview: Last thing you should do is touch your VCORE. Start by locking your peripherals "fixed" 200/66/33.
                  The only one you want to touch is 200. So when you raise it it'll look like this:215/66/33. Start by raising 5 at a time. Run Prime 95. If no issues, the next day raise it another 5. Your RAM may not let you go to high at 1:1. I have corsair xms matched 3200 and it'll give me headroom on the overclock up to about 221. You might want to drop it to 5:4 to get a little extra clock, but the downside is you drop your ram settings. Maybe loosen your settings abit. Mines running at 3-8-3-3 200mhz. Check your max voltage on the RAM you have, most will go up to warranty 2.8v. If your system reaches a point where it is unstable, then raise your VCORE one level. If still unstable, back it off a few on FSB. That will be your max clock. You can mess with the settings mentioned to see what works best with your system. Your limiting factor's are your RAM, HEAT, and stability. Some processors overclock well, others do not. I got mine to 2.8 very stable and RAM to match FSB. The older 2.4's could go to 3.4, that is crazy. I've had mine up to 3.1 but couldnt match the RAM 1:1. This is time consuming, it is not an overnight thing. Take your time and have fun. Good Luck.

                    Well, you sure answered my question! And my confusing question is about the 200/66/33 which I only did touch so thanks for the info!

                    EDIT: One more question, how do I find MAX voltage on my RAM? And how do I "loosen" my settings to what you mentioned above.. 3-8-3-3?

                      Each RAM set is diff you would need to check max voltage w/ the manufacturer(it is usually 2.8v). Timings are totally diff for each set too, so again, need to check.

                        Installed my new HSF yesterday and used some Arctic Silver5. OC'ed it to 3.4GHz and my temps @ full load is 43C. Do any of you think I can OC it more? Also upgraded my case fans to Panaflo fans also. Thanks!
