what do you think i should go with, the nvidia 6800 GT 256mb DDR 8X Tv/Dvi
or the
ATI Radeon X800XL 256 mb DDR 8X TV/DVI

wich one would play bf2 better?

I LOVE my 6800GT it runs bf2 great on high... plus its cheaper.

The only reason the 6800GT is cheaper is because of a limited time mail-in rebate, otherwise, about the same price now. BUt about 3 months ago, anybody with saving money on their mind that's not a super fanboy, woulda told ya X800XL, because it was 100 bucks cheaper at the time. So i would have to recommend nVidia for games like doom 3 and Far Cry (just to name popular ones) and ATi for other games like Half-Life 2 (and it's mods such as CS:S). It depends on which other kind of games you like.

6800GT all the way it is a very card and can be picked up VERY cheaply

X800XL is basically hte same price, almost same performance, nVidia owns OpenGL games, ATi owns Direct3D games.

I think the 6800GT is a better buy because it has more features and is very close in performance to the faster ATi cards like X800XT. I have used 6800GT/6800Ultra and a X800XT in BF2 and they are all very close to each other. The X800XL is clocked quite a bit lower than the X800XT. 400/1000 compared to 500/1000 in the XT.

yup 6800GT is good for anything out right now, way cheaper than the 7800GTX too.

Btw - never buy the very top end unless you have money to burn

6800GT clock speeds: 350/1000
X800XL clock speeds: 400/980

Pretty close, you can overclock either one to ultra speeds, but X800XL has different architecture ofcourse. Anyways, ATi supposedly discontinued the X800XT and X800XTPE, because it was kinda expensive, so they made the X850 series, which were better, and about the same price. And the X800XL, which was 100 bucks cheaper than a 6800GT at the time. There is no better one, it seems that a lot of people here prefer nvidia (no offese, just observing the posts).

Anyways, Crossfire wil come out in October, it can use two DIFFERENT cards, so i could have my X800XL paired with a X1180XT Crossfire edition, and it would outperform a 7800GTX because i have both cards running.

6800 gt has SM 3.0, so get it. Performance wise their pretty much the same.

Man this gets tiring, SM3 doesn't help too much, it only makes the shadows a teeny bit sharper and better. And it's mostly for Open GL games. Because Open GL makes the shader model 3.0, i often refer to it as Open GL 3.0.
