what are the advantages of buying a dual core amd x2 3800+ over a single core 3800+?


reviews tell me i dont need it unless i run multipal applications and its genrally slower in benchamarks

so why is everyone saying buy a dual core cpu?

Hmm, the 3800+ X2 is 2 ghz, and the 3800+ is 2.4 ghz i believe. Dual Core is for multi tasking and office work, it's still great in game, but a 3800+ X2 is only as good as a 3200+ in game. It's their new Intel beater, Intel used to do better in multi tasking and office work, but now, they're only better in benchmarks. Intel Dual Core processors arn't too good either.

If you mainly use computer for gamin then go single core if u like to multi task and have several things open at once go for dual core.

Games will eventually take advantage of Dual Core. For example FEAR will support Dual Core. In which case Dual Cores are gonna be ownage. Also once graphic drivers will start using multi-threading, the performance will increase. X2s are better for the long run, single core is better for the Short-Run. Plus from what I heard, a 3800 X2 will OC much better than a 3800 64.

John carmack said dual core games will be available but wont hold any significant performance increase. You wont see serious effects with dual core for quite a number of years.

Single core is so much easier for game developers to code for and will be still used mainstream for many years to come. Single core is for games dual core isnt..

Dual Core now doesnt make sense yet. Windows Vista is bound to take advantage of it, as well other games later next year. It won't help much now, maybe in multitasking. If you truely want Dual Core and you got an AMD Athlon 64 already, wait until next year for when AMD releases stuff on M2 socket - improved dual core, brand new memory intergrator thingy (forgot that name), DDR2 support...yeah.

Did anyone not hear how difficult it is to code a multi-threaded game? HL2 explore this option and said screw it, cause it would jackup development time by alot. Some games will support it yes, but its not expected to be mainstream until like 2-3 years later.

If you want t top end gaming system for use now then save the money and go traditional single core and use the money elsewhere.

The only reason is for future use, but I don't see any point in it. By the time you'll need it the prices would've dropped significantly.

That's not true, an FX-57 (best single-core for gaming) is much more expensive than a 4800. So don't make it sound like dual core is double the money.

I say go with the dual core. I don't feel that they are all that overpriced and they give you great performance. I mean technically single cores are better but in most cases the realistic average FPS diference is only 5fps at most. You will most likely be able to OC your X2 quite well and give you great performance.

thats becuase splinter cell was probalbly not designed to go over 80fps
thats why all the results are so close

Go find other benchamrks, you'll see the diference is very small. Plus you can't design a game to not go over 80fps... it's using Unreal engine.. so no.

Buy a normal CPU now for less money and then when games start to take advantage of dual core buy an X2 :)
