Works great. Especially if your XP cd is pre-Sp1 like mine.

Thanks guys, I was wondering how to do this. It can be a hassle to maintain 4 computers without an XP SP2 CD :-S

What can I do who didn't get an XP cd with my computer? I 'only' have a recovery partition on my harddrive and it does not include SP2....

                Contact your system vendor?
Other than that I don't know.

                  Yeah, I figured as much....
Their reply when I asked them was this; "Why would you need a CD? You already have a rescue partition on your harddrive" ...duh...

                  I'm a lucky guy...
                  Thanks for answering though!

                    Re: Quick XP Question

It's the vendors way of cutting corners, if they use 1 OEM version to preinstall on each PC they can save a load of money, cheapskates.

Another reason to build your own system: your own Windows CD.
It feels so good to install fresh on any store-bought computer.
Almost guaranteed to run better also.

                      Get:
                      1. Windows XP install files [from disc presumably]
                      2. SP2 install files [from disc or download]
                      3. RyanVM's Hotfixes, Update Packs and Addons [download]

You can then use nLite to slipstream everything up to
date into a bootable 'Windows XP SP2 with Hotfixes' disc.
*Check the nLite option to 'Make .ISO' and you can easily burn
the generated slipstreamed files into a bootable CD*

                      All the files I used:
                      XP Pro v1.0
                      XP SP2 Files
                      RyanVM Update Pack 1.3.1 .CABs
                      RyanVM Addons Full 1.0 .CABs
                      RyanVM Addons WMP 10 .CABs

                      <> nLite
                      <> RyanVM's MSFN Files Page
<> Guides - here and here

I seriously doubt I could build my own macine to the same specs for the same price or cheaper.
The rig I have now is a "companycomputer" meaning you pay a very reduced monthly fee to "rent" it from the company you work from.

A rather smart way to get computers to the masses.

And thanks for the links. Will definitely check those out!

download the network install from microsoft, we have to do this at school to put SP2 on 200+ machines. and then burn that to disc and it will open like a nomal installer!!!
