Heat problem

Can anyone tell me what operating temperatures are considered OK as far as my PC is concerned? As I write this my CPU temp is 54C and case temp 39C, which to me sounds far too hot. I've had this prob for a while and recently upgraded my heatsink & fan to a Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU Ultra-Quiet, and also added an air intake fan to the front of the case as it didn't have one. These reduced the temps I was getting by about 5C.

I'm running a P4 2.5GHz Northwood, 533MHz FSB, Radeon 9800 Pro, 1GB RAM. I've not had any probs with the PC since changing the heatsink (I was getting random lockups and crashes before I changed it) but it should be running cooler than this surely?

Well both of your temperatuers are very high. Intel recommends for Prescott that the case temp be no higher then 35. The max on a prescott is 89*C, mine idels at about 50*C, which makes your 54*C on a Northwood pretty damn high.

My guess is the case temp has a lot to do with that.

Ok

Remember all hot air rises.

Get a intake in the front bottom of your case. Get a big 120mm fan (if your comp supports it) and use it as a exhaust. Free up PCI metal thingys and add a fan there (exhaust).

What case do you have?

I have a problem with cpu temps to, i idle at around 47c which isnt toooo bad but when im in game my temps rise to 63-65c but ive been told this isnt bad as my cpu 'amd fx57' runs very hot.

Im using stock amd cooler but thinking about getting a new one.

That is very hot for an a64, FX-57 or not. Invest in a XP-90.

Well on the information on fx57 it states 65c is the fx57 peek temeperature... and is said on multiple review sites.

Hey our system cpu and fan are almost identical! First question is: When you installed Zalman, you cleaned cpu really well (no leftover "gunk" and no dust)? I found running "super quiet" does almost no effect. The Zalman is a monster- you should let it work! Run it straight to MOBO, go to BIOS and disable fan control. It should spin at about 2400 RPM. Next- do you have an exhaust fan equal to your intake? Your idle is way too hot, mine idles at 37c and NEVER goes above 52c.

While were on the subject of heat can anyone recommend me a good cpu cooler where i dont have to remove motherboard to install it. My pc specs are in sig.

Thermalright XP-90, or an Arctic Cooling Arctic Silver 5, or a zalman. There all good.

I run a Zalman CNPS 7000A all copper HSF and it's currently cooling an XP3000 Barton running at just over 2.4GHz.
Had it for almost 2 years and it's very good. :) Basically any of the 3 ones Eddy said will do you fine.
